YOU-NEED-A-BUDGET-PRINTER! YOU NEED A REPORT PRINTER! PDF PDF PDF PDF!! 21ST CENTURY YNAB SERIOUSLY!!

Seriously HOW LONG is it really going to take?! Take a moment to read the forums of other users before you respond to me with some generic "customer service" response.

Come on, having a printing option is just about the MOST BASIC function in literally ANYTHING.

I've been a customer for YEARS, before the transition to web-based.

Please YNAB YOU NEED A PRINTER OPTION!!!!

  • I’ve been using YNAB seriously for 9 years and not once have I had a need to print something from YNAB. But it being the 21st century and all, most people don’t. Printing is SO 20th century.

  • This post was directed to YNAB.

    Neither of you represents YNAB.

Neither of you can offer any change to any features aside from your opinions that somehow you think I give the slightest value to. It’s entertaining.

Why you choose to spend your time responding to a post not directed to you is beyond me...  But hey if it makes you feel relevant go for it.

Printing is SO 20th Century? LMAO ok buddy.

I’ll wait for YNAB to respond. Meanwhile I’m counting on you guys to keep this post alive  keep up the hard work; type away, your opinions matter to me! Haha

There is a feature request form if you want to request a feature only from YNAB and only hear back from YNAB. If you want to put your feature request out to all of us, you post it here.

There is a direct correlation between how much others’ opinions matter to someone and how much they post about others’ opinions not mattering to them.

  • Most operating systems have a PDF printer built-in (or that can be installed). I sincerely hope YNAB does NOT spend development effort to reinvent the wheel on this issue.

  • Hi YNAP. rinter !

Would you mind submitting your idea via the Feature Request Form as well? From there it's collected in a database, and just about every day, our Design Team combs through and codes them all, asking questions like Where is this person in their budgeting journey? What problem are they wanting to solve? Then, in regular research cycles they analyze all this collected feedback to plan for what’s up next  in YNAB!

As for printing, since there isn’t a printing feature in YNAB, you can export your budget and then print it.

To do so, click on the name of your budget (upper left corner) and select the Export budget data option. That will export your data – your budget and your transactions – in two CSV files.  Here’s an article where we cover this alternative to printing, as well as some tips for printing screenshots.

We’re also gathering input with this printing questionnaire. It’s 4 questions, so it should only take a few minutes.

Thank you for letting us know this is a feature that's important to you!

  • I'm an accountant and we do not have more than 5-10 pages of A4 papers in the office. Everything is on the cloud. Rarely we use the printer. I don't understand why it is so important for you to print out reports. Can you please explain why you need it so much? I might give you an alternative that suits you better

Blue Filly to be fair, the request is to pdf. That is still digital and can be emailed to others and archived, etc.

  • The fact is that after three years there is still no convenient facility or mechanism to print, complained about and discussed in this thread here

How to export data is detailed in this link: YNAB's document about alternatives to printing

Many of us have submitted a request to have printables added (in addition to other minimal improvements like more reports).

Please add your voice to ours by using either of these mechanisms:

    Printing Survey

    E-form to submit desired features

Some of us still use paper, and in some cases still need to use paper (or would like the option of printing to pdf in a reasonably efficient format).  It's really not cool for anyone else to either question or judge my reasons for printing.

  • Yes printing to PDF would be great! For people that don't understand. My spouse is low-tech and HATES digital. For our monthly review it is easier to just print out two copies and sit down at the table with them and write notes and such on them. It's about what works for us, right?

  • Just tested  this and it worked fine.

In chrome, click on the 3 dots on the right top of your browser. Choose print. Choose "Save as PDF" as your printer. Pretty sure that's standard with Windows.

I'm pretty sure Firefox, Edge, and Mac systems have the same functionality built in.

Tif_Ann I counted at least 2 or 3 clicks there. It should only take a half click at the most. Besides, don’t you think a better solution is to shout into the internet? It always works for me.

Tif_Ann Well I travel for work a lot and do everything via mobile app so ya. I understand how to print from a browser that isn't the issue. A nicely formatted print to PDF would be beneficial for mobile users. I get you guys don't see the value, and assume I am an idiot for wanting that feature. But it's a feature that would improve the functionality for me. If I had the time I would write and app using the API but I am too busy as it is. So step off your high horses and look at different viewpoints. Not everyone sits at a computer all day!

    • Hi roblock ! Different viewpoints are helpful to our design team. The mobile aspect is a new one I haven't seen before. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this! If you’d like to submit this idea for consideration to our product team, please submit a Feature Request. That is, if you haven't already!

roblock I want the ability to capture a snapshot of what hubby and I agreed to for the budget vs where the budget ended up after whamming. Since there is no budget audit trail, I make a note when I move anything significant around. We generally do the once monthly budget in advance (although currently we are budgeting paycheque by paycheque) and then for the most part the WAMs are minimal but sometimes my husband will ask where did that money go (when the available is no longer available) and then I have to remember what we agreed to in the first place.

Tif_Ann i tried that and although it was ok there were still issues with the display. Plus the scaling to make it fit is tiny. Okay to view online with zoom.  See attached.

And for those who ask why the need to print, the main reason I have is to crystallize the budget as agreed. Since there is no audit trail to budget changes, and as an accountant, I like (need?) to have a copy of the agreed budget that I can reference if needed against the final for the month.

  • Shocked that this is such a "hot topic".  There are some valid points on both sides.  With that said, I don't think it's too much to ask for some simple print options to be built into YNAB.  No, I don't print that often.  However, its largely because the workarounds are not always an option to get exactly what I want...especially with scroll down lists that reports generate.  Additionally, the CSV files are largely a mess and inconclusive for what I'm normally after.

Times I would like to print include the following:

    • Weekly budget meetings:  So much easier to print out reference material, jot notes/comments, and copy/share/save.  I'm very visual and don't want to be tied to a screen all the time.   I like to "draw" on things to think, plan, whatever.
    • We manage some of my in-laws affairs which involves us making several purchases on their behalf.  I categorize and plan for these purchases.  It would be nice to be able to print out the purchases by line item with details for the month.  It would allow for us give them expenditure details straight from YNAB without having to manage a separate spreadsheet like I do now.  At 80+ years old they are very "20th century"...sometime almost "19th century"....ha!
    • And geez...sometimes it just nice to print some things to be able to sit back with and think about.  I am fairly tech "comfortable" but I'm not a fan of having a screen in front of my face all day for many reasons.

I'm sure YNAB will get there one day with this.  Take care all!!!

    • Hi Orange Lobster !

If you have a moment, would you mind submitting a Feature Request? These are good instances of how you'd find printing helpful and that form will allow our Product team to see them! :)

  • It's very frustrating that this feature has been totally forgotten.  The feature in the older program was nice to have, and made budget meetings with my wife easy to do.  I'm really disappointed as well.

    • Hi DanaRoth !

      Sorry for the disappointment here!

I hope you'll give exporting your budget or reports a try, or one of our other alternatives to printing. You can submit a Feature Request to let our Product Team know you'd like to see more printing options brought to the web app, but they're currently not on our short term roadmap.

  • To all the YNAB Support team members... thank you for following this thread! I have submitted the feature request for a report print option more than once.

crinkles the problem is that the budget and the spending export separately so you don't see your budget vs actual.
