Need Help With A Goal...

Hey fellow YNABers!! This may be something I'm just totally missing, or maybe it's really not functioning properly and it's not just my brain.  I have a category I'm setting a "Target Category Balance by Date" goal for. The amount I need in there is $1,947.99. The amount I have put into it so far is $391. I have another $52.50 scheduled to go to it in a few days. Why is it showing my goal as only 2% complete? I'm not great at math, but I know that's not right. Right? Ugh...someone PLEASE HELP 😩

  • Is your decimal place in the wrong place in the goal?

ItsCalledWhiskey You didn't add $391 to the category; you took $391 out. The Target Category Balance by Date goal assumes you want to save up a total amount in category without spending from it over time. I think a Monthly Funding Goal would work better in this case because you're repaying the debt as you go.

(To clarify, you added $391 to the category and THEN took it out, of course.)

  • mamster nailed it. You had $443.50 budgeted, but you had a -397.00 in activity. So now, Available Budget in that category is $52.50.  This is exactly 2.7697% of your goal. Looks like YNAB is rounding down! :)

You goals aim to bring you that exact amount of money in this envelop . Any money to take out along the way will put you farther from your goal.

  • As others have noted, the "target category by date" goal function doesn't track $ you spend out of that category as going towards the goal.  For categories where I know I will be spending out of the category before the end date is reached, I prefer to use a monthly funding goal - and just average out how much I need to put in each month to meet my overall goal.

  • If you want to see several (veteran YNAB users, I think) approaches to using the software for this end, perhaps you may want to read this post and its responses:

Personally, my only goal like that is for a conference. I did the math on my own and just used the monthly funding goal instead. You have to understand that this is an untouchable category when you are covering overspending, though. Otherwise you'll have to recalculate each month. Just a heads up.

Hope this helps! I know I like reading how other people approach using the software in different situations.

  • Wow...see? That's the great thing about this forum! Something so simple and I completely missed it! I knew I had to repay this much but did not take into account that although that's the total amount I needed to pay back that I'd be tracking the money as I sent it to where it's owed...you guys are awesome thank you ALL for the help! :)
