Why the small keyboard?

Hi, I was just wanting to comment on the new app update for android. I appreciate the work put in to add the calculator function to the app, but I think it wrecks the transaction input screen, where the numbers are much smaller and harder to select. In addition the EXPENSE and INCOME red and green buttons were very easy to select with one hand but now that's located WAAAY up at the top of the screen so it's hard to reach. I don't see the need for calculator functions when inputting a transaction (should only have to input the numbers of the transaction and that's it). However if it's absolutely needed, I'd suggest putting the calculator functions into a "drawer (where you swipe right or left to access a calculator that has more functions, and you could even fit more modifiers like * and / instead of just + and -) I'd like to suggest a potential "option" in the settings to choose between two different transaction number-entering styles. this would satisfy parties that both like and dislike the new update.

  • Hi Aric !

Thanks for taking the time to weigh in on the new calculator feature! Fitting more on that screen did make the numbers smaller - we appreciate you letting us know that's an issue! Would you mind submitting your "drawer" idea through our Feature Request form? It goes directly to our development team to let them know what you'd like to see going forward! :)

  • Yes! Yet another poorly thought-out, user-hostile YNAB UI change. God I wish there were some other app that had equivalent functionality where the developers didn't feel the need to impose unneeded UI changes just for the sake of change!!  Really, really frustrated and annoying. I wonder if anyone at YNAB actually polls their customers to see if changes are needed? I was frustrated by the app change to include all the budgeting stuff because I NEVER to that from my phone. The phone's interface is just far too difficult to use for extended work. And now this change that makes it EXTREMELY difficult to enter simple, basic transaction information. it also completely up-ends the previous transaction sequence: amount, then  payee, then account (if necessary), then any other info. Now you've got payee at the top, all sorts of other rarely used information in the middle, then the amount at the bottom. ??? What is the point of this? Again, does YNAB ever do user-testing to see if their changes are helpful? Very, very frustrated . . . again!

  • Android user here. I actually like that everything fits on the screen now, so I don't have to scroll to enter a transaction. I don't find the keyboard size to be an issue for me. I manually enter every single transaction, the vast majority from my phone, so not needing to scroll is a boon for me; the amount still gets entered first, followed by all the rest of the info.

doctor_who I agree that everything fitting on the screen now is a great feature - though I don't see why the size of the numberpad had to change much. It's the wasted white space on either side, and the fact that there's a blank spot beside the 0 that doesn't register at a touch, let alone as a 0 (which you expect it to because the last numberpad had a nice big 0 button)

Apparently the same design went into iOS.  While the smaller numeric keypad was a shock, it has not made me make any tapographical errors yet.  I find the ability to select payee, category, and account before entering the amount to be superior to the Classic app; I was frustrated with Classic forcing me to enter amount to get to anything else.  Don't know how other people shop, but I typically know where I am, what account I'm using, and what category the purchase will come out of before I know the precise amount I'm spending.

Another thing that may be new, or maybe I just noticed:  I can tell the app to forget a payee location!  This eliminates the annoyance of the app guessing the wrong payee where there are two, as I can delete the one I use less frequently; and it lets me deal with gas stations that rebrand themselves so it's the same location but a different payee.  I had asked for this in Classic years ago, glad to see it finally got here.

Patzer the tip is coming in late but in the previous app version, you could enter $0 then the payee, cat etc. then tap on the amount. That would get you back to the screen to enter the amount. Then "done" (back to payee, cat etc screen) then save.

    • Patzer I'm glad it's working for you. My mileage is more problematic. Even with the larger keyboard I would sometimes have difficulty making mistakes. With this tiny keyboard I have to work much harder to get the right numbers in and often have to re-enter the amount a couple of times before I get it right. And the way I shop is almost 180 degree from how you do it. In an effort to reduce paper, I hardly ever keep receipts and, instead, work to keep the amount I spent in my head until I can get to the YNAB app. So, for me, the amount is the first thing I'm headed for as remembering a series of numbers that changes every visit is harder than remembering what store I'm visiting.  And I didn't even notice the forget location which I guess I'm glad to see given that the GPS function got much less precise a couple of updates ago.

  • We're happy to hear most users are finding the latest update helpful! The iOS app was updated first and we wanted to bring the same functionality to Android. We love any and all feedback so we can continue to improve, so please don't be shy about filling out the Feature Request form! :)

    • Faness Hmm. "Most" users? On this thread it seems opinion is clearly divided between 2 who find the changes frustrating and 2 who don't. Not sure how you get "most" out of a 50/50 split.

    • Sorry about that Michael Morad-McCoy ! We've received a lot of feedback about the latest update, and while a lot of it has been positive I understand the size of the number pad is an issue. You're not the only person to comment on it and we've been forwarding this feedback to our development team for further consideration.

Faness I'd prefer a larger numberpad for sure, but if at the LEAST the 0 should take up all the available space at the bottom. Right now if you are slightly to the right of the 0 button it doesn't register as a touch at all. Instead of the square it is now, it should at least extend to the backspace button on the right.

    • Aric Good point! Yes, I like the new layout in general, but the zero button should be larger.
