New Budget for a New Year?

Happy Holidays everyone!  I am writing to get advice about whether to start a new budget for a new year, or just rename my current budget 2018-2019.  There are not any big changes that I foresee to my budget this year.

Any advice, pros/cons, etc. that can be shared are much appreciated.

  • No, no, no, no no.

No need to start a new budget ever unless it requires a complete overhaul, like getting married or divorced. I'm using the same budget going back to April 2014.

The best reasons to keep it

    1) You don't have to repopulate all the categories that have accumulated balances

2)you can easily access your past history within the same budget and make new budgeting decisions based on past averages... and it allows Quick Budget to calculate the averages.

nolesrule Thank you so much for the response!  I do have a question about how you handle specific categories when you keep the same budget.  For example, I have a category called Christmas 2018.  Do you hide this category and then just create a new one called Christmas 2019?  If you use this method, will the reports still contain information from the hidden categories?

edenky22 in that case I'd rename it for Christmas 2019. When you want to see a year to year spending comparison for Christmas it will all already be in one category.

edenky22 My categories do not have a year attached to them. There's just no need for it. Just call it "Christmas".

edenky22 You just name it Christmas. Then in the reports you can filter for just this year or last year.

  • How do you all deal with speed issues? I've been creating a new budget for each year because once the transactions reach a certain #, the web app is basically non-responsive (taking several seconds to open edit fields or click approve)??

Cornflower Blue Network I don't have that experience with over 3 years of transactions, 143 categories and about 60 accounts.

  • Interesting... I had to start a new budget about two months in last year because the app was non-responsive and tech told me I had "too many transactions." It was literally painful. (and that's on a new gaming computer, fast wifi and chrome.)

I may try to keep things going this year and hope that the performance issues have been resolved. :)

    • Hi Vee Van Dyke !

We've made improvements to the process for loading for budgets with a large number of transactions since you wrote in last year.  You mentioned still seeing slowness issues when you reach a certain number—would you mind submitting a Bug Report?

I haven't seen any reports of a widespread issues, so I want to make sure we get this looked at. One of our bug squashing experts will take good care of you!

    • Nicole at YNAB It's not that much slower this year, just a hair. Nothing bug-report-worthy.

Glad it's been fixed! I'll keep chugging and hopefully, it will continue to load. I hate having to flip through budgets to get historic transactions!
