Using Credit Card to pay a tracking account

Hi all!

Looking for a bit of help on this,

Basically I have a loan account on YNAB and is on the budget and being tracked, I want to pay that loan monthly amount with my Credit Card solely for the rewards and just pay the credit card from my checking account.

how do I record this type of transaction? I have attempted to do a transfer from credit card to loan account on YNAB but that does not move money assigned in the budget from the loan to credit as it normally would when I spend on the credit card.

normally I pay off the credit card each month using YNAB’s handy feature and it just tells me the single amount to send to the card.

any tips and help would be appreciated!

Hey Keith .  If the loan account is indeed a tracking account, the transfer transaction you create from the credit card to that loan should ask you to categorize it.  Then, when you budget money towards that category, YNAB will make those funds "available" towards your credit card payment.

DnA Apologies! My mistake it is not a “Tracking” account it is a budget account under “Line of Credit” account type...

Keith Do you actively use the loan account, or are you just tracking the balance as you pay it off with the credit card? If you're just tracking the balance, you might want to create a new tracking account, give it a starting balance, and then transfers to that account can be categorized and budgeted for.

Keith Also, that exclamation point in my first post was an accident.  I wasn't "yelling" :-)

DnA Just tracking the balance as I pay it off, I found it handy in the budget as it is on the top of the budget. I suppose I could re-do the account as an off-budget account, Didn't think of that one :) Thank you for that.

Keith that explains it then :) as some others have said, making a tracking account & moving any transactions you've already entered should make it do what you've expected.

  • Do you have enough in the category for the amount of the transfer you made? The money will only move into the credit card payment available if it was in the original category to begin with

adriana01 yes there is money assigned to it in the budget and when I do a transfer it states I do not need to catagorise it.
