Update: Change in Pill Colors
Hello everyone,
We recently introduced a change to the colors (the “pills”) around Available amounts on the budget in order to bring those colors into compliance with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. We were made aware that these changes actually made it more difficult for some to quickly identify key information, which is the opposite direction we want to move in for accessibility.
Today, we’re following up with two related updates, which will roll out to YNABers over time.
- We've tweaked those new colors a bit. It’s a small change that made a significant difference for some of the folks who tested it in the past weeks.
- We’re introducing the option to use the classic colors, if that’s your preference. To check that out, open your Budget Menu by clicking on the name of your budget in the top left, select My Account, and scroll down to the Options section.
If you'd like early access to these options, please send us an email at [email protected]! Otherwise, please know that your account will automatically be granted access within the next couple of weeks.
We've got lots more work to do to make YNAB even more accessible, including not relying solely on color for important signals in the app. We're excited about that work to come.

I just got the email about the update to the colors, and I can see the difference in the colors now. I do have the red-green color blindness and was affected by the original change about 2 week ago.
When is the iOS app going to get this new color scheme as the new updated colors that was released today is better than the original colors for me?

FLMark80 I'm glad these new colors are having a positive impact on the budget for you. We don't have a set timeline for adding this into the mobile apps just yet, as we're monitoring feedback closely through the web app rollout.

Thank you for taking user feedback into account and adding the options to switch! It really makes a difference when support listens to issues and respects the users who report them, then ultimately admitting to a missteps and essentially providing a better solution that before (customization!!). 😄 Rather than being demeaning and implying to users that they weren't using a product correctly like support over at a certain password manager that just launched a regressive update...
I don't think I've gotten the new version of the new colors yet, or if I have, I still just find the text much harder to see in its default state. The lighter colors do give a more "zen" look though, which is nice. So I used the css plugin to make the font-weight for the pills bold and make the new background colors 80% opaque so the text stands out better, and I'm happy with this solution.
Though I do think the font thing is something to look into since it seems to be showing differently to people. I've seen someone people post screenshots where the font looks more like the one you posted, whereas my fonts are more thin.

Hi Veronica,
I tried in 4 different browsers, including Edge which I never use, and the colors are the same for me across all the browsers. That said, I compared them to the original blog post and I can see that the yellow and red are now noticeably darker compared to what they were before.
Maybe my eyes are worse than I care to admit or my monitors are poorly calibrated, but I find making out the font harder on the new default colors. The numbers don't really stand out, so I have to squint at them. Below is a screenshot I took at 125% zoom. Normally I'm at 110% for YNAB, but enlarged it for this screenshot, though the text still came out a little blurrier than it is in reality.
On the far left are the new default colors, the middle is the original, and the end is the modifications I made to the original so the numbers are bold and the colors lighter, so the font stands out more. I'm not suggesting YNAB make these changes and some may even disagree that the middle default is easier to read than the left or think the right stands out too much! 😅 It's just to better illustrate what I may not be conveying properly with words.

andmade Thanks for the detail and screenshot, that's really helpful. The font I see in my budget is heavier than the version on the left that you're describing. I'm going to dig in on this one a bit more with our team and get back to you!

My only hesitation is wondering how the Toolkit will mesh with these options. :)

Hot Pink Wrench We're rolling this out to everyone slowly so that we can catch any issues before they impact all YNABers. We started with the users who had written in with frustrations about the color changes and we can add users manually as well if needed. Otherwise, all users will have access to this feature over the next few weeks (that's just a guess. I'm not sure how long it will take) without having to ask.
