Calendar View For Scheduled Transactions

This is a feature that I think would be wanted by many users of YNAB and shouldn't be all that difficult to add. Anyone here know whether this is a feature the development team is considering? It would be great if they listed feature requests that are under consideration, under development or in progress.

  • If you'd like to see a calendar view for scheduled transactions, please send a note to our design team with a Feature Request. It helps to know how you'd use the feature, or what problem it would solve for you, so if you have those details to share, we'd love to hear them, too. Thanks!

  • I'll +1 that.  Would love it, though it does steer folks potentially back to forecasting from budgeting (if future balances are shown, that is).

Saish Dawg I don't think it would be the case, as it's not that much different than turning on the running balance. It would just a different view for people who process info differently.

Vibrant I personally love the idea.  However, looking at future balances by definition is forecasting.  Whereas YNAB wants you to only look at money in hand.

Speaking for myself, that is why Quicken and other apps always failed me.   I saw money that had unassigned jobs or future income and always got into a hole.

Saish Dawg depends on what you mean by "future balance". If you are talking about account balances, then that's a cash flow forecast, which has nothing to do with the budget, but is actually quite important to answering the question of will you have enough money in the account to cover those upcoming transactions. I do this all the time to manage my checking account balance.

If you are talking about projecting future category balances, I'm not sure how this feature would be useful in that regard. After all, you aren't budgeting income directly to categories, so those future scheduled transactions would only project a decreased category balance, just like the "available after upcoming" feature in the category details.

nolesrule The latter, which is what most calendars display (future balances in addition to transactions).  See Pocket Smith as an example.  It's pure forecasting.  Today, you can simply go to the all accounts view and filter on dates if you want to see what is upcoming.

Saish Dawg I don't think a calendar view needs any kind of balances. I would expect it to look like a regular calendar, just pre-populated with transactions.

Something easier than building in a calendar would be to have a live calendar you can add to google calendars or apple calendars. I'd lose my head without google calendar.

nolesrule Certainly not required.  Just every financial app I have seen shows them.  :^)

  • I would absolutely use the hell out of this feature. When thinking about time, I tend to visualise a "calendar" in my head of the week, and having transactions on it like this would be super helpful. I recently moved, and there are various payments that need making ever month that come out at odd times - so a calendar would be super useful to visualise this rather than just the dates in transaction view.

    • Tan Flute Interesting thought on how this would help visual processors such as yourself! The best way to get that into the hands of our design team is to send over a Feature Request. 😊
