Label for color flags

Hi,

I would like to know if there is a place to make a label for any color flags for the transactions ?

Because I'm affraid to forget the meaning of each color that I use occasionnaly.

If it doesn't exist, is it possible to think about it for a future release ?

Thank you!

  • I can think of a couple of ideas.  You could add notes in the "Account Notes" section of one of your accounts, that can be found by clicking the edit pencil icon on the account name.  You could also create dummy scheduled transactions (choose a date way in the future) and do not put any dollar amount in the transaction.  Add in the memo section what the color means.

ynaber2613 There have been reports in the past of slow performance when someone had a transaction scheduled in the far future. Not sure if it's an issue today.

  • The 3rd party Toolkit for YNAB allows you to name the flags and will show the name when you hover the mouse over the flag. There are many other useful features as well.

dakinemaui Yes! I've recently started using flags and found the Toolkit update with the flag labels helpful.

Here's what it looks like in use. I've customized red, yellow, and blue.

If you simply hover your mouse over the flag, you get a "tip" with the name of the flag. It's been great!

Krys Sadly Toolkit is not currently allowing the naming of flags. You hove over the flag, the flag choices, as shown in the pic, and it comes up with that "Edit Flag Names" showing at the bottom. I have turned this feature on in Toolkit,, but it is not working, and others have reported it as not working too. Soon, hopefully, it will be working again.

Cirrus For me (I'm using Chrome) that is currently working just fine. There was an issue a while back but I think it's been fixed at least for me for couple weeks now.

Cirrus - That's a bummer! It's working just fine for me in Chrome.  I wonder if you need to refresh the Toolkit? I hope it gets sorted for you - it's been a great addition to my account management tools.

  • Hey  Caro! You're right - there isn't currently a native option for labeling flags. I love this idea, though, and our product team would love to hear more about it, too! You can fill out a feature request form here if you'd like 😊

That said, these suggestions are great! I particularly like the account notes section for this. Another (notably less elegant) workaround would be to use the memo section of those flagged transactions as a reminder of what the color indicates.

In the search bar at the top of your account's register you can search by flag color, quickly pulling up transactions you've left the same memo on, to jog your memory!

  • If you aren't using the notes field under your month, you could put the meanings in there, copying them across each month. I have stayed with just 3 colours, as I can't remember the meaning if I go any further. I didn't realise that Toolkit lets you name them. I will do that, but I rarely do much on my computer, mostly on my phone where toolKit can't help.
