Credit cards problem

I have  a three part problem

1) i have a number of transactions in my account that are saying they haven't cleared despite having been directly imported from CC company.

2) Not all the closed transactions in the  credit card account imported. (i.e. imported through 3/15 when there were non-pending transactions through 3/18

3) Balance will not match when I reconcile

  • Hi TMACMI ! I’m happy to help. Let's go one by one!

    1. Are those Scheduled Transactions by chance? Transactions imported from your bank will automatically clear, but scheduled transactions will not. When imported or scheduled transactions appear in your account register, you will be asked to approve them.

An easy way to check if the transaction has imported, is to click the Payee field in the web app and look for "Bank Import Details". Check out this HelpDoc for more details on approving transactions!

    2. Your financial institution may hold a transaction as “pending” for a day or two, but once they are cleared/posted, they should be available to import in YNAB within 24 hours. If you're seeing delays beyond that,  you can report a Bank Importing Issue here and our importing team is happy to look closer at your specific connection.

    3. Your account balances are controlled by the transactions you enter or import. So if anything is missing (#2) or incorrect, then that's likely the culprit. To get things on track, you can add transactions to make sure you can reconcile in the meantime.

Nope, not scheduled transactions. I checked the Bank Import Details and they are verified as imported. If it makes a difference these are all credit card transactions.

Yep, in this instance its credit card again.  YNAB imported transaction through the 15th. Then there are 7 non-pending transactions through the 19th that weren't imported,  then there are 10 or so pending.

      There is a gap.

I don't think that is the case but it will help. I think the problem is that to reconcile YNAB has all my transactions through 3/18 for instance. Amex's current balance shows all transactions including pending through 3/20. Amex doesn't show daily balances so I can compare against 3/18

    • TMACMI I've just sent you an email about the transactions failing to import.

When you log into your Amex online banking, are you able to see the most recent balance that doesn't include any pending transactions? That's the Cleared Balance, and it's the one you'll want to refer to when reconciling your account.

    • TMACMI I just spoke to one of my coworkers who uses Amex, and she said the balance you're looking for when you log into Amex online banking is called Total Balance.

Matthew  thank. Yes that is exactly the problem.  As near as I can tell Amex does not show a cleared balance, nor does it show a daily balance.

So if YNAB shows a AMEX balance of $x,xxx.xx on 3/18, I have no cross reference on the AMEX site to reconcile with.

      unless I'm missing something.

    • TMACMI Hmm... so nothing that's marked Total Balance? If you'd like to send get in touch with support and send a screenshot (with account number blacked out) of your Amex online banking, we can point you to the right number!

Matthew  Sorry for the delay. I very much appreciate the support.  This will be a great example. In this photo you will see a Total Balance of  $1018.68.  But that includes the pending transactions. Pending transaction are not downloaded into YNAB so you can't reconcile against the Total Balance.

What one should reconcile against would be the balance as of March 28 when the Audible expenditure was posted, but as you can see it doesn't show the daily balance as of that date.

    • TMACMI Are you positive pending transactions are included in Total Balance? I just double-checked and every source I can find (including from Amex directly and a coworker who uses Amex) indicates that they're not. On the other hand, I know every credit card company is constantly messing with every aspect of its interface and product offerings.

I'd be happy to give Amex a call and check on this, but if there's any way you can test it out—e.g., by making a small transaction and checking whether it affects your Total Balance when it shows up as pending—that might be quicker. Either way, I'd love to know. Thank you!

TMACMI The Total Balance does NOT include pending transactions. I just checked my YNAB account against my AmEx account. I have a pending transaction, but the Total Amount in AmEx matches my cleared amount in YNAB.

  • #2 -- A transaction has to a) clear the bank and b) get picked up by the import provider. There will always be an additional delay between (a) and (b) as the latter only polls your bank once (I believe) per 24 hours. (It could be twice, but hopefully you get my point.)

That's why manually entering transactions is recommended. Categories are much more up-to-date, providing more accurate spending guidance. This is especially important in a multi-spender scenario.
