Bi Weekly Goals

Is there any chance that YNAB will be adding Bi Weekly Goal options instead of only Monthly or weekly?

    • Hey Gray Dragon ! Not that I have much different to say... but wanted to make it official. 馃槈

Our team is looking closely at feedback on Goals for future updates. We have more up our sleeve! I can't say for sure that a Bi-Monthly option will be added, but if you haven't yet鈥攜our can let our Product team know you'd like to see it by submitting a Feature Request.

  • A frequency of twice per month is a period of half a month = semi-monthly. A frequency of twice per year is a period of half a year = semi-annually. No one has issue with "semi-annually", nor does anyone think a "semicircle" is anything other than half a circle. It's beyond me why so many people cannot extrapolate from year to month and still keep the "half" connotation.

I actually don't know of anyone who has issues with bi-weekly pay meaning "containing 2 weeks of pay". Just like "bipedal" means having 2 feet, a bicycle has 2 wheels, etc. ("Bi" meaning two, not half.) I applaud Gray Dragon for using bi-monthly to mean a period of two months. 馃憤馃槀

The one I see abused most frequently is bi-monthly when discussing twice per month. It just doesn't fit the pattern of the other similar words (that are not contentious), most obviously to me because "twice" is a frequency, not a period.

Obviously, my opinion is in the minority given the pervasive abuse in history (and indeed in the present). It's likely a fools errand to point all this out, but hey, it's been a while since this came up last time. 馃槑

If that's what he was saying, then why even bring up the question?  You can already set it for every 2 months, 3 months, 4 months...  He's asking twice a month (semi-monthly in your scenario above)  Also not fortnightly.

dakinemaui Does bisect mean to divide into 2 parts or to divide in half? 馃槈

The problem is that people apply "bi" as a prefix, when what they are really trying to do is apply "bisect" as a prefix.

I would say that is yes,

      but this,

      nolesrule said:
      divide in half

is a result of the cutting into two equal parts.

Sort of like how 2x2 and 2+2 both equal 4, but that doesn't mean multiplication and addition are the same thing.

  • And the way to do semi-monthly in YNAB currently is to break it into two transactions/goals. E.g. One on the first and one on the 15th and make each of these monthly.

  • Rather than a biweekly(every 2 weeks) limitation, wouldn't it be better to have the recurring goal as every ## weeks? i.e. my Chewy.com subscription is every 5 weeks(fixed amount due every 5 weeks), also a food delivery subscription every 6 weeks. So rather than limiting the recurrences to 2 weeks...perhaps make it a user selection of 1-to-X weeks?

  • I am looking for the bi-weekly goal option too! And as the Gray Dragon mentioned this would be helpful! For me, this is to coordinate with any biweekly type things (such as pay cycles or mortgage/loan accounts).

Ill just leave this link here, for the confusion about bi-monthly/weekly etc.

  • Another request for bi-weekly goals / targets.  Currently, my mortgage, car payments, and many investments are bi-weekly.  Also important for recording pay.

    • Redlow Make 2 scheduled transactions that repeat every 4 weeks. Turn on running balance. Get a month ahead.

These things put you in an even better situation (easy budgeting, clear cash-flow view) than needing the biweekly goal.

Marisa There's already an "every two weeks" repeating goal - is this not what is being requested?

    • Primm I think Redlow is looking for a bi-weekly target, which we currently do not have. If they would like to set up an every-other-week scheduled transaction, they can do that!

Marisa Yes, definitely looking for a target, since I have a number of items that bill me every two weeks.

  • Ok, so I want to second this as a required feature.  This is my first time using this application but I would expect the flexibility to match my billing and earnings delivery timing with my goals and budget.

For example (4 asymmetric situations) :

    - My paychecks come in every 2 weeks on a Thursday

    - My mortgage is taken out every 2 weeks on a Friday

    - My water/sewer bill is due every 3 months on the 20th of the 3rd month

    - My disability check comes in on the last business day of the month

For my paycheck and mortgage, 10 months out of the year I have 2 transaction each, whereas 2 months a year I have 3 transactions each (bonus money and bonus house payment :-)  Yeah me but it results in a complicated budget. With the limited options, I am trying to figure out do I create individual targets for each event or sum them up for the month and adjust each month that is different?

For my water/sewer bill it appears that I can do a By Date and Repeat Every 3 Months; so simple enough.

    • Welcome Matthew ! Let's go through these:

      1. You can create a Scheduled Transaction that repeats weekly for your paycheck. You won't assign those dollars jobs until they arrive in your account in real life.
      2. Create a scheduled transaction for this, as well.  On the budget side of things, I'd recommend a Monthly Savings Builder Target that equals 1/12 of your total payments for the year. You'll gradually save up for those months with an extra payment.
      3. Similar to #2. Scheduled transaction, Monthly Savings Builder Target that is 1/3 of your bill.
      4. Same as #1. There isn't an option to recur on the last day of the month, so you'll need to schedule it for the last day of this month. You can change the date of the next instance, as needed.

    • Marisa Pity the old rule of using last month's money for this month's budget isn't prominent, because that could make a big impact on this situation. Now, such a new user will only come upon the idea by accident, not knowing that YNAB could be even more powerful in their life.
