Why the credit card "available" red when I am not overspent in any category?

I never have understood why I receive a red "overspent" notification after entering a payment in my credit card when I am not overspent in any category.  I usually ignore the credit card payments and go by the account balance, but this seems like something is wrong.  Why does this occur?

For instance, BOA Visa Rewards shows red because I have just made a payment of 1454.73.  It appears as if YNAB has not set enough money aside in "BOA Visa Rewards" for my payment.  Why?

Because you sent the CC more than was Available in the category. As for why the Available is not enough to cover the account balance, either:

    * you didn't reserve funds (budget) for the starting balance

    * you did have yellow overspending at some point in the past

dakinemaui Don't forget a third one. Processing order of transactions with the same date.

But with an amount this high and the way the OP was written which seems to imply it happens regularly, my money is on not budgeting the starting balance.

    • dakinemaui I started this credit card in 12/31/2018 with a balance of 537.00 and immediately (next day) paid it.  So I began 2019 with a balance of zero.  How is this incorrect? (see figure 1)

Also, there is no category in the budget ( for months between Jan 2019 and current date) in which the available amount is less than zero (yellow overspending).  This should mean that I have set aside money in the budget for the credit card expenses.

Slate Gray Vacuum Did you ever budget for that $537 payment?

So you have overspending in other months? There seems to be a year and a half worth of data in your budget. Have you ever paid your balance down  while having charges the same day or dated afterward that were included in the payment?

  • How can I have sent the CC more than was Available in the category?  I don't have any overspending....  It is more like there is some flaw in the database behind YNAB.

Slate Gray Vacuum Look through your budget for categories with a negative available balance. It would be colored yellow, but also possibly red.

Start with the current month and work your way backwards.

    • Slate Gray Vacuum Overspending can be masked by subsequent inflows. The only reliable way is click on the Activity (middle) value in the CC Payment category. A mismatch in the top two values indicates overspending. Check all the months' areas.

TBH, you might as well save yourself some time and effort, skip the search, and just reallocate in the current month. The Payment category for a paid-in-full CC needs to have an Available amount matching the account balance (as a positive number).

Did you budget $537 to the CC Payment category in Dec 2018, making funds available for that payment?

    • dakinemaui Yes I budgeted $537.00 in the "BOA Visa Rewards" CC category in January 2019 to cover the existing $537.00 balance on the Visa credit card.

Slate Gray Vacuum Since you sent the payment in December 2018 you should have budgeted for it in December 2018

  • In responding to Nolesrule: I don't have any categories with a "red" / negative available balance.  That is what confuses me.   No overspent categories for any month, but still have the mismatch with the available for payment that YNAB tracks against the outstanding balance from Bank of America.

  • Did you make any outgoing transfers from the CC? For example, buying a gift card which you put on budget as an account?

Are there any negative budget entries in the CC Payment category in any month?

  • One easy thing you could do: compare the running balance for the last transaction each month to the CC Payment category in each month to see when they diverged. (You could even pull up both views in separate browser windows for side-by-side comparison.)
