What's up with this scheduled transaction/quick budgeting behavior?
I was surprised and pleased to notice when looking ahead at my July budget page that the "Underfunded" quick budget option is now correctly including categories with upcoming scheduled transactions even if the current month transaction hadn't "triggered" yet.
But then I noticed this isn't actually working consistently?
When no categories are selected, the Underfunded option correctly (overprojecting for Monthly Spending Goals notwithstanding) calculates for all categories :
When a single category is selected, Underfunded shows the correct “budget for upcoming” amount:
(I clicked the button; it correctly added $1495 to the Budgeted column.)
But when more than one category is selected, it all falls apart:
It sure would be nice if the "underfunded" button for multiple categories worked the same as the "underfunded" button when no categories are selected!
Hi Vibrant ,
Budgeting for Upcoming is only an option when you have one category selected, and it instantly budgets the exact amount of any upcoming scheduled transactions (that's the only thing it takes into account).
Underfunded is available with one or more categories selected and will budget enough to cover overspending, upcoming transactions, and goal targets.
If no categories are selected, the Quick Budget buttons (like underfunded) will only budget to categories that don't have dollars budgeted to them. The numbers shown, however, reflect all of the categories.
Let me know if that makes sense--it looks like that's what's showing in your budget, but let me know if you feel like it doesn't describe what you're seeing. If it is and you're just letting us know you'd like to see it changed, feel free to submit a Feature Request!
If you save up for a non-monthly expense (that is in the scheduler), Budget for Upcoming is useless because it ignores what you've saved. Underfunded is what you want.
If you don't save up (i.e., a monthly expense), both Underfunded and Budget for Upcoming give the same budget entry.
Chrissy So what need is the Budget for Upcoming supposed to address?
So, what this made me realize is that I had a scheduled transaction that was throwing off my no-categories-selected Underfunded amount! 🤦♀️ I made a $1500 credit card payment in June and the scheduler repeated the amount in July. Once I removed that scheduled payment, the no-categories-selected Underfunded number dropped to $2100, as expected.
Adding a Monthly Spending Goal to my handful of fixed-recurring-payment transaction categories (where I was relying on the upcoming transaction to be included in the Underfunded number) fixes this issue and causes the Underfunded number to be (more) accurate to what I'm looking for.
