Rename Catergory heading, ie Credit card payments

Set up my budjet template and set up 3 of my credit cards under one heading.  I want to remane it and split it into each card.

  • If these cards are represented by on-budget accounts, they already have a built-in category for their payments (under the Credit Card Payments group).

If these cards do not have associated budget accounts in YNAB (which is common if you're just paying off the balance), then just rename the category and add two more.

And just additional FYI, this official category group and its subcategories can't be split, renamed, etc.

    • WordTenor Do you know why a credit card payment category can’t be renamed?  In order to work around this, I create a new credit card payment category, and hide the one I don’t want.  But this would be a lot simpler if I could rename it.  Just wondering why credit card categories are treated so differently.

The mechanism behind the scene interfaces with the card account itself. You can rename the card account, which will in turn rename the category. And your card payment category group is...card payments. I suppose they could allow renaming but what else would you name it?

Don’t create new card payment categories. If you don’t understand how the credit card payment categories work, you need to learn about them. If you have your own categories in addition to the real ones, your budget will become a mess in very short order.

    • WordTenor I don’t have any credit card accounts set up, and I don’t want to name the category group.  I want to rename a category within the Credit Card Payments category group, because I don’t like the name I chose.   I’m not sure what you mean by real categories versus my own categories.  If and when I do create a card account, you mention that renaming it will in turn rename the category, which is what I’m trying to do.  Thanks for the info.

Sea Green Saxophone You should not have any categories in the Credit Card Payments category group if you do not have any Credit Card accounts set up. If you can, you might need to talk to support, because you aren't supposed to be able to add your own categories.

Sea Green Saxophone So I think what you are saying is that you have not added your credit cards as accounts in YNAB. If you are actively spending on your credit cards, they should be added as accounts in YNAB.

However, maybe you have decided to stop using credit cards as a form of payment but you have some with balances so you need to pay down those balances over time. In which case, yes you would need categories for. So it sounds like you created a category called Credit Card Payments and you were budgeting all of the money you needed to pay off (for example) 3 cards. But you realized it probably makes more sense to have a category group called Credit Card Bills with 3 sub categories under it: Card 1, Card 2, Card 3. Well, this is easy. I do all my messing around with category adding and subtracting and renaming in the web app and not on mobile, so keep that in mind:

      1. At the top of your budget click on +Category Group (below where it says September 2020)

      2. Create a category group called Credit card payments (or whatever)

      3. Once the group is created go to the group and there is a + next to the name of the group (ie Credit Card Payments). Click on the plus and add Credit Card 1, then repeat for cards 2 and 3.

      4. IMPORTANT NOTE - this is NOT what you should be doing if you are adding your credit card accounts in YNAB and spending on them. This is only for unused cards in pay down mode.

Sea Green Saxophone to rename any category that you created, just right click on it.

Sea Green Saxophone “real” would be better written “default” or “YNAB-created.”

If you have a card payment category which you can’t rename, you have a card account. Let’s start there, hold off on all the other advice you’ve received just yet. Let’s figure out why you have a credit card account in the budget you weren’t aware you set up. Do you see an account in your lists of accounts with the same name as the category you want to rename?

    • nolesrule I’ll definitely check with Support on that.  You can easily do that in the mobile app, but apparently not in the Web version.   That would make sense, and also explains why you can’t rename a Credit Card Payment category, but could rename the linked account which would rename the category.   Good info, thanks for the reply.

    • jenmas Yep.  I think the issue is that the mobile app allows you to manually add a category under Credit Card Payments, which may be a bug, because the web-based version does not.  Neither will allow you to rename a card payment category once it is set up.  Thanks for the reply.

Except, upon further fiddling, the bug category can be renamed. So my earlier advice still applies—if you have an category you can’t rename, you have an account. So you need to check your accounts.

    • WordTenor I actually don’t have any card account set up.  I think the problem is that the mobile app allowed me to add categories under the Credit Card Payments category, which may be a bug.  The web-based app doesn’t allow that, which sounds like the correct behavior, which is what you’ve described.   I’m going to follow up with Support on this.  Anyway, I have a slightly better understanding of credit card setup in YNAB at this point...still a lot to learn.  Thanks for the info.

Sea Green Saxophone if you have not added a credit card to your list of accounts, the Credit Card Payment category should not even exist in your budget.

Sea Green Saxophone @jenmas is right about the category group. And, again, if you have a category you can’t rename, you have an account set up somewhere. The bug categories can be renamed.
You’re describing a budget that includes credit card accounts.

    • WordTenor Interesting.  I definitely cannot rename the bug category (created in the CC Payments category group in the mobile app).  It cannot be renamed in the mobile app or the web version.  I can rename any category in any other group using mobile or web.   Seems like there definitely is a bug, but good advice to check my accounts, which I’ll do again — just in case they were created without my knowing.

  • The fact you have a category under the CC Payment group indicates that you DO have a credit-based account. The account and category always have the same name.

I wonder if you have closed the account in YNAB, moving it to the bottom of the account section. Oddly, closing an account does not hide it's Payment category.

If you are using a card for purchases, you should have an account for it in YNAB. If it was closed, you can re-open it.

dakinemaui I don't think OP has a category under the CC Payment group. I think OP created a category called Credit Card Payments and now realizes that there should be individual categories for each card under an umbrella heading.

jenmas Could be. The difficulty in renaming doesn't jive with that, but it does fit with the claim of no accounts. A screenshot or direct access (i.e., official Support) is probably needed to work this out.

  • Appreciate all the replies.   Interestingly, my question is no longer about why I can’t rename categories under the Credit Card Payments group.  I understand why that is now.

Rather, it is, should I be able to manually add a category under that group—which I can definitely do in the mobile app—and these manually added categories have no associated credit card account.

I’ll update again after discussing with Support.

  • Just wanted to let folks know I got in touch with Support.  They confirmed it is a bug (you should not be able to manually add categories to the ‘Credit Card Payments’ group, which is possible to do in the mobile app).  I am providing them info to help get this fixed.  Thanks for everyone’s replies.
