Revising prior month's check doesn't change to be budgeted?

Good afternoon! I noticed that my paycheck from mid-January had a few post-tax deductions related to purchases I made at my work's gift shop and so I want to add those expenses to the inflow to capture what it would be without them and then record the transactions as separate expenses. When I increase the amount of the inflow transaction, nothing happens to my "To be Budgeted" from January or February. Does anyone know why that is the case? When I add the transactions as separate expenses, now my January Other Shopping category shows red overspending? Thanks very much for your help.

  • Do you have money budgeted into future months? If so, what's your TBB in those months?

    • nolesrule I didn't have any $ remaining in TBB for February before I made the adjustment and then afterwards I still don't have any remaining.

Slate Gray Hail That's not what I asked.

    • nolesrule Sorry, I'm not following you. Yes, I have money budgeted in future months but $0 in TBB.

Slate Gray Hail When you have money budgeted in future months, it is possible to steal from it without realizing it because YNAB won't tell you unless you look at the future months. And then if you receive new income, those future months will swallow it back up rather than making it available in the month you added it.

    • nolesrule That makes sense. But if I didn't have any $ in January or February's TBB and then I increased an inflow to TBB in January, shouldn't it show up somewhere?

Slate Gray Hail In the month in the future where you have money budgeted.

You still need to have money in the category, regardless of whether this was "purchased" by withholding by employer or by you paying later.

    • dakinemaui That makes sense. But I was expecting TBB to increase when I increased the inflow and then I would take those $ and use them to cover the overspending. However, TBB remained the same in both the prior month and the current month.

Absolutely; money categorized as TBB flows forward from that month onward. My suspicion is either you were mistaken about TBB<Feb> being $0 prior to the transaction increase or TBB<March> was negative. (or possibly even a later month). It's a simple thing to test by changing the transaction back to the original amount.
