Anyone Else Finding YNAB on New Edge (Win 10) "Hangs"?

For the past few months, YNAB seems to cause browser issues when using the new Edge on Win 10.  At the start of almost every session, I get a notification that the browser has stopped responding and I'm given the choice to stop or wait (I usually wait and it clears).

Is anyone else experiencing this? Note that I don't use the Toolkit extension.

  • Do you have that issue with any other site?  Or just YNAB?  Being an avid hater of Windows 10 (I liked Windows 7), I became an apple convert once Windows 7 went out of support.  So I can't be of much help on Edge.  Not saying you have to use these, but do you have the same issue with Chrome or Firefox?  Just looking at options to isolate the problem.

WordTenor  Why the laugh. You do realize that new Edge is chromium based and higher rated than chrome, right?

  • Hello, 28pfds !

Couple of ideas. (1) Have you tried loading your budget in Private Mode, just in case an extension is interfering with YNAB? (2) Is your budget several years old? If it's a venerable budget with a lot of data in it, we might be able to compress it to improve performance. Let me know!

Matthew Thanks Matthew. Yes, my budget is a few years old and quite large I think. Is it possible to request that you compress the budget. This "stalling" seems to happen on the first few clicks I make once I open YNAB, after which it seems to stop. I'm guessing that could be it.

Matthew  You can try to compress my budget if you like. But in the mean time, I've also cleaned out the cache and cookies, etc and this seems to have helped.

  • I have been using the new Microsoft Edge exclusively since January 2020 and have not seen this issue.  My YNAB data goes back seven years. Perhaps what Matthew has stated would help or try disabling any extensions or reset the browser.

farfromtheusual  Why would you say that? I'm referring to Chromium Edge - you know.. the new one? The one that's higher rated for security and performance the Chrome?  No. Edge isn't the problem. Thanks anyway.

    • 28pfds likely because so many people have had so many problems with microsoft products over the years that they're treated like a joke. They've frequently been on the "cutting edge" of a lot of stuff... only to not actually have things work correctly.
Apparently all the people picking on edge have struck a nerve for you.

farfromtheusual I get that, but new Edge has very strong reviews by almost every trusted authority, and it's rated higher than Chrome in terms of how stressful it is on the computer's resources, the speed and the built-in security. You could say "it struck a nerve". I don't like when someone asks a support question and others respond with irrelevant info. There are other forums where people can discuss their views on Edge if they wish. From my perspective, if you have no viable response to the support question being asked, then why bother replying? Do people feel that they have to reply to every thread they read, even if their response is not relevant or useful?  Anyway, YNAB has determined that my budget is in need of being compressed due to its size and the fact that I've been using YNAB Web since it was launched. I have a lot of transactions and they believe optimizing my budget will resolve the issue.

By the way, I tried opening it on Chrome on two different computers and I had similar issues... Just sayin'.

  • Look at all these Edge haters!

I just tried it on edge, and didn't have any issues with it.  I don't use YNAB on it simply because I like the toolkit and there isn't a version of the toolkit for edge.  So I use chrome.  But I don't have anything personally against Edge.

Bruce Thanks. I'm going to try YNAB's suggestion of requesting my rather large budget to be compressed. I think that could be it.  I don't get the hate for the new Edge either. It's basically Chrome, but with more features and a higher security and speed rating.

  • I was having issues in Brave Browser too, that seem to have started when the new move history feature was added. I have a 5+ year old budget, so it's probably quite large. If I loaded YNAB in a Private Window it was much faster. I ended up deleting all the youneedabudget.com site data in Brave Browser (Settings -> Search for "View permissions and data" -> Site and Shields Settings -> View permissions and data stored across sites) and that seemed to do the trick.

jredders  YNAB support helped by compressing my budget and removing a lot of hidden deleted transactions. The problem stopped after that. I think you may be correct that the issue became noticeable after the new “budget history” was added. YNAB also recommended doing a “fresh start” annually to keep the budget size under control. I may try that though I'm not certain how credit card transactions that happened before the Fresh Start will be handled after the Fresh Start is done

28pfds I don't like the sound of that. My budget goes back over 10 years. I haven't had any issues thus far and I love having that net worth history and occasionally searching for old transactions to remind me of when I bought my last TV and those sorts of things. This new history better not mess this up. I don't like being told I should fresh start annually due to software issues.
