zero out prior month overspending

I'm restarting my budgeting. I would like to figure out how to zero out prior month overspending by, say, transferring money from a savings category so I can start with a clean slate. None of the plausible things I've tried seem to work.

  • Have you tried doing a Fresh Start? I think that's the easiest way to zero out prior month spending because all of the transactions are removed. The only trouble with it, and maybe what you're trying to avoid, is that you need to update all the account balances again. Also, you won't have any of your spending data (if you're a nerd like me and care about that stuff). But all your categories and goals will be there. And sometimes it's just necessary.

If you don't know where the Fresh Start is, you just have to go to your current budget, click the arrow next to the name of the budget (top left corner) and then Fresh Start is the third option in that menu. Hopefully that's helpful, but I know it's not exactly the answer you're looking for. Tbh, I always get into trouble when I start trying to work things around in YNAB so I've done a Fresh Start like 4 times in the last 8 months. And sometimes I'll do a fresh start to get a test budget going just to play around with the goals and see what I can do with my money.

    aaaanyway, good luck :)

  • Transferring from a savings category should definitely work. What isn’t working??

  • If you’re trying to restart, maybe try a Fresh Start. It’s available from the main menu.

Prior month overspending is always zeroed out in the current month. If you want to just start fresh with the existing category structure and your account balances are correct. You can select all categories and choose the Quick Budget option to Reset Available Amounts. This will remove all funds from all categories and put it in TBB.

  • I discovered that "Overspent in previous month" appears if amount spent in a category in the previous month exceeds the amount budgeted for that category UNDER THE ASSUMPTION that overspending gets subtracted from current month's "available to budget", rather than from current month's "category balance". The remedy is then to budget enough (from an available resource, say "Savings") in the previous month to cover the overspending. Thanks to everybody who contributed to my thinking to resolve my dilemma.

    • You've got it cegcs ! Cash overspending in the prior month is subtracted from To be Budgeted in the current month. (Credit card overspending, on the other hand, is included in the balance on the card, and doesn't affect To be Budgeted in the current month). If you go back a month to move money there, you'd take care of that "Overspent in [Previous Month]" amount. That said: time travel can have unintended consequences, so be careful. 😉It's best avoided - be sure to check for any overspending/overbudgeting in the current month if you do time travel in your budget.

Check out our help doc for more info on when the month rolls over.
