How to remove Auto Assign from Mobile App?

This really, Really, REALLY has annoyed me.  I was very comfortable with my process...it took me literally 5 minutes to distribute items on my mobile app on paydays and if I need to adjust, I did it here.

That's not an option on mobile anymore?  I've been fighting it for 20 minutes now.   This "improvement" needs to go AWAY immediately (give the people an option and don't force a change like this).  I'm literally, right now, looking for alternatives to YNAB.

  • Sorry that this update has thrown you into a loop. I totally get it and I'm a longterm user too, but love the change. I think there might be an easy way to do it the same way that you used-to.

Did you previously click the Inflow section and manually type each amount and category you wanted transfer money into?

If not, could you walk me through your process pre-update so I can assist?

  • I agree completely. I just added some money to my account on my iPhone. I didn't think I agreed to auto assign it, but I it's gone from money available to budget so I must have clicked something accidentally. I wanted to add that money to my groceries budget, but now I'm not sure where it went. Please let USERS decide whether to auto assign. Not all of us are overwhelmed by the tools. Make offering auto assign a preference setting that users can turn OFF.

  • Hey Silver Trombone ! You don't have to use Auto-Assign! You can instead tap on the assigned column in the mobile app to assign money to individual categories - does that get you closer to your old workflow?

  • Yes I'd love to be able to turn auto assign off as well !

It's very frustrating trying to work around it.
Please give us the option to disable it !

  • Same as others - I used to just click the lightning bolt and happily assign away. I don’t want to auto assign, I just want manual option on mobile!

  • Hey all! Our team is looking at ways to customize the controls in the Auto-Assign preview.

If you're up for sharing your old workflow or options you miss, our Product team would love to learn more. As they plan for future improvements, your feedback is valuable. I will say it's unlikely Auto-Assign will disappear completely, but there's a lot of potential in between for our team to work with!

And I'll share one more comment below, with a few suggestions and my personal experience as a fellow, mobile-first user.

    • There have been some big changes to the mobile app and it takes time to adjust. I hear you. I use the mobile every single day and felt frustrated at the start of our internal beta (and love it now). If you're willing to try a few things, stick with me. 😉

Auto-Assign in the mobile app is like a budget-wide Underfunded, based on your Targets—with bells and whistles. I'd encourage you to set targets for your categories, or tweak your existing ones and try it out! It can be helpful to read that Help Doc linked above, to understand how the logic works.

My mobile routine was ingrained and it took me *cough* a while to adapt (and trust) the new feature, but Auto-Assign has made budgeting even faster. Adjusting and adding Targets was key.

      To help now, two suggestions:

      • In the preview, Auto-Assign will assign dollars to categories based on your Targets—but you can tap and manually change those assignments.
      • There are category-specific Auto-Assign options like Average Spent, Average Assigned, Underfunded, Reduce Overfunding, etc.

You can skip Auto-Assign completely and assign dollars directly to your categories. It sounds like many of you miss the option to select specific categories or category groups, then use Auto-Assign—and that's something our team needs to know about.

    • Nicole I appreciate the efforts to improve the app, but I don't really need an app to auto move my money around.  It's not like I have millions flowing in everyday and it was a burden to distribute between catagories.  If I had that "problem" I would hire an accountant to move my money around.  For now I'm going to just do my assignments from the web based version on my laptop that still lets me select manual money assignment.  Mobile app was great, but now it is just irretating.

Nicole my phone is about to die, or I’d post it now. But someone (maybe even a YNAB account) should post this same request for info in the YNAB subreddit. There are a lot of folks there that I don’t see in the forum here, but are definitely also frustrated by the new mobile workflow.

I’d also caution YNAB to consult with some accessibility experts as they work on any revisions, not just to address the problems introduced in v3. Contrast, colors, and voiceover are probably not the only considerations in a complex and workflow-critical feature like this. Don’t solely rely on users self-reporting basic support needs.

Anyway, this feature has so much potential(!!!), but also seems to have frustrated a lot of users. Let’s make sure we invite all the various communities to give feedback on this so the dev team has more ideas to work with and broader perspective on workflow and priorities that can’t be determined from telemetry data or limited sample responding to this CTA.

Thanks for inviting more serious conversations on user workflow!

Nicole Yeah, category groups that then showed the average were critical to my workflow. Example workflow was lightning bolt, go to the groups that I knew I needed to fund on the earlier side and then hit for the goal. Altneratiively, in some cases I would do the average as well if it had beene trending higher and then do individual categories. I have WAY too many categories to do this one by one. Clearly the beta wasn't big enough to pick up on this. How soon will you have this fixed? I'll look into other budgeting programs i the mean time because this just destroyed my workflow.

    • Nicole I have a list of bills that I go down that I track in a spreadsheet, I used to click “To be Budgeted” -> enter the money -> select the category -> save. Then I’d click “to be budgeted” -> enter the money -> select category -> save for my next bill. It gave me the control to know how and where I was allocating my money. My work has us put work expenses  on our personal credit cards and we get reimbursed a pay period later. I don’t want my money going to that “overspend” unless I just got paid with the paycheck that includes the reimbursement. “Auto-allocate” just covers all your overspend first. I don’t want that. Additionally, the work around is I have to scroll and find that category first, select the category then move money. It was so easy when I could just click “to be budgeted” at the top instead of having to scroll up and down my budget to find all the categories I need to allocate money to when I get paid. It has literally doubled the time it takes for me to allocate my money across budgets. SUPER annoying, I absolutely hate the new feature.

    • Nicole additionally, once I’ve scrolled and selected the category, if there was an overspend I have to delete out that amount to put in the amount I want to allocate. Literally doubled my time on this app.

      Like
    • Green Keyboard Thank you for these details! One quick note: Instead of deleting out the amount that already exists in a category, you can try hitting the plus button and then enter the amount you want to add to the category. This will leave the amount you had before and simply add to it, just like the Move Money feature you used before.

While we're investigating ways to search for categories more quickly (like you used to do when you clicked "To be Budgeted") there's also a workaround you can also use for now that will save you a bunch of time:

      1. Tap the top category on your budget and then select Move Money. (Or, on iOS, swipe on the first category in your budget to Move Money)
      2. Enter the amount you would want to assign to whatever category you are assigning to
      3. Tap the "To:" row and select the category you want to move that money to
      4. Move the money

This should mirror your prior workflow in number of taps/speed. The only difference is that instead of tapping To be Budgeted, you now swipe on a category or select one and tap Move Money. This is certainly a workaround, but should help until we have some improvements in place!

    • Silver Trombone - Does this get you closer to your old workflow?

  • It feels like the software is insisting on controlling the workflow against the will of some users. Sure, some folks don’t like labor intensive budgeting. But others, like me, have very specific ideas about where they want their income to go. For example, I assign my average property tax spending as the monthly budget amount. That way the property tax budget builds up for the big bill that comes in once a year. I definitely don’t want to auto assign the “play money” budget. That one is supposed to be a fixed amount my husband and I agreed on. Some budgets don’t need to vary from month to month because our spending is consistent. I’d just want to assign what I assigned last month (and I miss how easily I could see that before without additional clicks.) Other budgets have targets (a feature I like), like saving for a home improvement project or a wedding. So I don’t want to distribute money into these categories by someone else’s guesses. What I don’t like is that I accidentally did that once. I would like the “feature” out of the way. And I’m put off by the suggestion that we’ll get used to it. I don’t mean to be rude, but I’ve had an ongoing frustration with YNAB removing features I found useful (going back to negative rollovers—yes I get why that’s considered a bad practice). YNAB has a lot  going for it, including many things I haven’t found in other budgeting software. Why not make the default settings your choice, but give us the option to hide autopay and change other settings? Do this rather than removing options. You can put up big warnings like “YNAB doesn’t recommend this!”

Lavender Pegasus Completely Agree!! Sometimes I overfund, underfund, or don't fund a category at all. I also fund my categories in a very specific order. These decisions are made intentionally and thoughtfully. The auto assign feature makes me feel like I've lost all organization and control over my money. I'd love to be able to turn it off.

  • I missed something. You can't assign your own categories anymore? I haven't noticed anything different in my budgeting process other than some terminology changes.

  • Annoying isn't the word for this. Super frustrating!!!!! I know where I want my money to go every paycheck. Now Auto Assign assigns some of my paycheck and I can't seem to undo it. It needs to be able to be turned off. Why cant I just create a profile that I use every paycheck? I'm considering leaving YNAB and going back to my old system.

    • Magenta Jackal If the amount you assign is pretty consistent, I think using a Budget Template and the Auto-Assign feature could work well for you. When you create Targets with dates of when things are due the design of Auto-Assign will help you prioritize where to assign money each paycheck so you have what you need when you need it.

  • I’ve had it. I really loved YNAB. This “tool” seems intended for those of us who don’t need to worry about prioritizing our spending. I’m looking for a new app. I don’t know if I can find one that I like better than old YNAB, but it shouldn’t be a problem to find one that isn’t so annoying as the new version. I shouldn’t have to spend a lot of time moving money around after it is auto assigned. Targets for spending vary depending on the month.  That YNAB didn’t understand how its product is used and needs information on workflows shows that this update wasn’t tested enough.  There should be an ability to opt out and an update shouldn’t be introduced that isn’t intuitive.

  • And there’s a bug where auto-assign shows money remaining after I manually assign money to my categories to a zero balance.  If I click on auto assign to  attempt to get rid of the positive balance there are zero dollars to assign. If I then manually assign the positive amount to a category, I get a negative balance in auto assign.  Only after I subtract the amount again and put it in to be assigned does the balance go to zero.

  • So here’s my issue… I budget on an excel spreadsheet for the ENTIRE year.  I know where every dollar is going and have it planned out to the cent.  I put a lot of effort in this part of my budget and this is where I tweak things (for example, I budget every month for Christmas as a sinking fund…but I can borrow from myself and repay myself later in the year if needed).  So my budget is not the same every month but it is accounted for throughout the year.

Auto-assign makes this type  of workflow a PITA… I now avoid the mobile app and use the desktop as a workaround.  I still consider this a temporary solution until you “fix” it or until I find a suitable replacement.

  • Just returning to say - i suspect this new auto assign feature on mobile is perfect for those who are a month (or more) ahead and can budget for the entire month at once, or those who have a budget template that is fully functional — But, and it is a huge , this is not a valuable or useful feature for those who are new to YNAB and are not a month ahead, or to those who have not worked with YNAB enough to have a fully functional template that works with different income amounts and due dates throughout a month, and with non monthly income streams (in my budget we have one retired pension paid every second week and one working salary paid every other wee - these are veery different amounts and as two weekly schedules vary in  when in a month they occur.  Not being a month ahead means i cant rely on YNAB’s alogarithsm to accurately tell the difference between what is due, what i need to spend to eat and my hopes for saving and paying down debt.

  • I just renewed my subscription to YNAB for my 3rd year. I have been totally committed to this app and going through the learning curve. But the auto assign has really thrown me for a loop. I don’t where my extra money is (and I know it’s there), or how to distribute it,  because it’s already been done for me. This is not what i signed up for.

    • Sea Green Vacuum I'm sorry Auto-Assign has thrown you for a loop! Can you tell me a bit more about how you were assigning funds before? I'd love to see if we can come up with a workflow that works better for you. In the meantime, a few thoughts on what might help out:

      • If you've clicked Auto-Assign and are concerned about how YNAB distributed your money, you can use the recent moves feature to get some insight. Any Auto-Assigned funds will have the lightning bolt symbol!
      • You can definitely opt to assign funds manually by tapping the category and entering the amount you'd like to assign (or using an Auto-Assign option for just that category, by tapping the lightning bolt).

Let us know if this sounds like it could work for you!

As of now, Auto-Assign is optional, and you can assign funds to each category manually on mobile or the web. That said, our product team would like to hear more about your preferred workflow if you're up for getting in touch with them! Here's the best way to do that 👍🏻

Rachel thanks for the reply. I guess the auto-assign doesn’t feel optional on the mobile app as it defaults to that function. Your only option is to tap on Auto assign, scroll down the list to see where it put your money, remove the funds from that category and then assign your funds to the desired category.

My suggestion is to be able to toggle the auto-assign function on/off in the settings.

  • Oh wow! I love the Auto Assign feature. I’ve learned it operates from the goal information which wasn’t really being used by the software before. It was just informational. Now the Auto Assign uses that to assign the budget. Once I saw that happening I fixed all my goals and my money goes where I was normally doing it manually.
