Help getting rid of an accidental duplicate account

Hello!

I had a savings account that I initially set up as a tracking account, but then a few months into using YNAB I decided I actually wanted to have it as a budget account. In my newness and ignorance, I just created a new budget account and began using that one as normal and ignored the tracking account version. Therefore, the tracking account balance got off so now YNAB is showing two different balances (151,000 nok and 136,000 nok). The budget account is the correct one (151,000) , but now I can't figure out how to get rid of the tracking account (136,000). When I try to delete it it gives me a negative balance of -30,000 nok in my To Be Budgeted and I don't understand why or how to fix it.  I'm not understanding where the -30,000 came from.

Is the only way to fix this to start over from scratch?

  • Reconcile the balance to $0 and then close the account

CSquared how did you reconcile?  You have to still leave all the activity in the account

    • CSquared When reconciling, it's important to know that you're reconciling the Cleared balance. It sounds like that Tracking account might have uncleared transactions, which is why it's not fully reconciling to zero. Clear all the transactions (click the gray c to the right of each transaction to make it green), then reconcile to zero again and you should be golden! :)

Once you reconcile and close the Tracking Account, you'll want to:
      1. Move money from categories to To Be Budgeted to make it $0 again.

      2. Do a quick budget audit to give yourself peace of mind that what's available in your budget reflects the actual available balances in your accounts.
