Goal to maintain a balance in the category since it doesn't look like there is?

Not sure if this is a feature request but is there a way to have a goal for a set amount and keep it at that level?

For example, in my home maintenance category I would like to keep 150 dollars in it, but I do have some transactions in that category. The needed for spending target does not allow you to keep the balance in that category at the target to me, and the savings balance keeps adding every month. As a practical example, I spent 100 dollars in the category but the underfunded amount is only 45 dollars.

I just want to keep it at the target level but if I spend, I need to move the funds back to that category. I also think this would be helpful when people have their "emergency fund" fully funded and don't need to contribute as much in YNAB if they want to use the target.

  • Hi there! I think you are talking about Savings Balance goal with no date.  You would set the target as $150 (with no date), and it'll go orange as soon as the category goes below $150. Is that what you're after?

Pat C unfortunately, savings balance targets with no date do not show up as orange when they're underfunded.

I use the Toolkit and have the following features enabled:

      • Emphasize underfunded goals (this turns underfunded goals blue to differentiate them from credit overspending)
      • Emphasize unmet category balances

I've just experimented with an undated savings balance target and this did show as blue for underfunded.

    • monkeyhanger the emphasize unmet category balances sounds closer to what I need. I already have the blue.

But does the underfunding adjust to the category balance?

i.e. the category balance is 150 but I spent 100 --- that means the underfunding should be 100 dollars not 50 dollars.

Slate Blue Pilot (2903ac015cdb) No idea because I wouldn't use a goal like this during a month. Why don't you set up a test budget and have a play around.
