Starting balance needs to be categorized. Why?

My Starting Balance for a credit card is showing that it needs a category. It is entered as an outflow with "Starting Balance" as the payee. How do I fix this?

  • Set the Category to To Be Budgeted. Yes, it doesn't quite make sense but that is the proper category.

  • The category "To Be Budgeted" is effectively "Debt Management" in a credit account. If you find the use of TBB to be confusing (as most do), you might express this in a Feature Request to YNAB. It doesn't seem like it would take very much development effort to instead display "Debt Management" in such accounts.

      RBRS if you are a paid in full user you now need to budget the amount of your starting balance to the credit card payments line
