  • Hi Nicole, I'm also having issues with the CIBC bank link.  I have to reconnect it every week or so (started in January) and now it won't connect at all.  I hope you guys can resolve this issue soon because I love the sync feature.

Nicole at YNAB thanks for being to quick to respond to. I thought I'd let you know that the integration seems to be working again. I've had payments coming in for the last week or so.

Graham S I’m sorry you are still having trouble! I just looked into your connections on the backend, and it looks like the CIBC connection is successful, but are you having issues with the transactions coming in? If so, you can write in to [email protected] with some transaction examples (assuming you don't want to post them here 😊) and we will get our Direct Import partner on the case!

Hi there! I'm sorry I don't have better news. The Direct Import partner is looking into these connection issues with CIBC, however we don't have a timeline. They've been working on it and we hope it will be fixed soon!

In the meantime, have you tried our File Based Importing option? Bringing in your transactions is as easy as dragging & dropping the file!

  • First TD wouldnt sync for about 5 months. Then PC Mastercard has been down for a few months. Now CIBC is not linking. I'm feeling SO FRUSTRATED. I love YNAB but honestly I will not be renewing my subscription. I'd rather save the money and use a spreadsheet to budget with- this is more time/work than a spreadsheet would be at this rate.

Ivory Wildebeest I realize it’s frustrating. Direct download of transactions still works, though, right?  Using the direct download still should be pretty fast, if not quite as automatic as sync.

Pink Viper should have said “file based import” rather than “direct download”.

  • Hi all, I tried removing the CIBC and redoing all he links for the bank and I still have no success in syncing. It'S been a long 2 weeks of manually importing and such to have things in sorta real-time. Is there any provisional time-frame for a solid fix?. Just wondering. The program is great, when importing works.

    • Hi Orchid Guitar !

It looks like the CIBC connection still isn't completely stable. An issue was fixed a few weeks ago, but we're hearing reports from YNABers once more—so we have our Direct Import partner investigating! They're working with CIBC to get things running again.

  • I'm also having this problem. I'm over a week in to the trial but can't add my bank :(

I know dealing with banks on this sort of thing is a huge pain, but is there an update?

    • Hi Harry Showerdrain !

Sorry for the trouble! I wish I could say data integration wasn't a pain, but you're right. When banks make changes to their platforms, it can take our Direct Import partner a while to rebuild and get things back up and running. We don't have an update just yet, but we're keeping our eyes on things!

  • Any more updates on the CIBC connection? It’s still not working on my account, and I can’t even re-add the connection for my one account I had disconnected a while back, and was delayed reconnecting. It would be nice if it were working again soon!

  • It really seems like it has been a long time. My trial is almost over, but I haven't even been able to add my account yet. I *could* do it manually, but I really like the idea of the automatic feature.

Is this normal for things to be broken this long?

    • Hi Harry Showerdrain — Sorry for the trouble! It can vary. Some issues can be resolved quickly, others take more time and involvement with our Direct Import partner.

  • I used up my free trial while I was living in the US and all my accounts there were working fine. Now I'm living in Canada and CIBC is not linking/syncing. I really can't use YNAB without that feature so I'm paying for something I can't use right now. Total bummer because I really do want to use it!

    • Hi The Greening Girl !

Sorry for the trouble! Our Direct Import partner let us know this is going to be a longterm issue. They're still working on a fix, but they can't say for certain how long that will take. For now, the instability with CIBC is, unfortunately, expected.

We don't want you to pay for something you won't use. If you delete your YNAB account you'll automatically receive a pro-rated refund back to the card you used to purchase your subscription. If you'd rather not delete your account, you can write in to [email protected] and we can process your refund that way.

We hope you'll give YNAB another chance once this is back up and running! :)

  • Hi - CIBC syncing not working. Im testing Mint vs. YNAB and having all kinds of issues with CIBC linking. What is going on? When will it be fixed? Why does Mint work so seamlessly and YNAB doesnt? I really would prefer to use YNAB, seems much better than Mint because I can get better control of budget categories but not being able to link to a bank as big as CIBC is a huge miss. You guys need to fix this ASAP. Thanks!!!

    • Tan Mermaid I had the same opinion, however I watched this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPVEB759gkU and it changed my mind. I find better control over my budget and money when I manually review and add transactions. With YNAB, you're buying in to a budget philosophy, and with that, automatic imports aren't really that important, maybe more of a distraction.

Take the 30 minutes to watch that video, I can't recommend it enough. I was about to dump YNAB for Mint, but I came across that video and ended up keeping YNAB (any YNAB staff reading this, he should get credit for me keeping YNAB!).

I know it's a bit more work to manually add transactions, but it's a lot better control in the end.  That being said, I've noticed my CIBC transactions coming in more often, however I still review, correct, and add manually as required.

    • Harry Showerdrain hi Harry. I do appreciate the importance of being involved in your own budgeting and becoming a real expert and master of all your spend. But I need the auto linking or else this really loses something vs mint. I’m using both simultaneously and in mint I’m not using their auto-categorization and I’m categorizing every transaction myself.

YNAB is still a better system because it allows you to have better control over categories and subcategories among other things.

But if I can’t auto link my account it’s like having an awesome phone without an internet connection.

And the issue im talking about isn’t with a small bank - it’s the 10 largest in North America.

    • Tan Mermaid I can appreciate that, it certainly seems handy to have it automatically import. I was disappointed at first as well, but have made it work for me.

My *VERY* uneducated guess on the matter is that YNAB is only allowed a certain number of API calls to CIBC per day (or hour perhaps) and are obviously exceeding this.  Again, this is simply a guess, and I really have no idea.

I do know that while it works with Mint, as a long-time budgeter (is that a word?) YNAB is a much better approach (even though we'd all appreciate the import working).

I have been able to make myself make it work with the manual import, but hopefully they get the automatic import sorted soon.

    • Hi Tan Mermaid !

Sorry for the trouble! We do use a different Direct Import partner than Mint. In fact, Mint just so happens to have a monopoly on Intuit, who owns them.

After working on the widespread issue with CIBC, we've heard the final word from our Direct Import partner. They've narrowed down the issue to some server side instability with CIBC, so the connection may be inconsistent at times. We’re optimistic they’ll be able to repair the integration eventually, but our Direct Import Partner isn’t able to offer us a timeline on a permanent fix.

In the meantime, you may try attempting the connection every now and then as we've been finding the issue tends to come and go, and it’s always worth a shot! If the connection is ever down, don't forget to keep your account balances up to date! harry_showerdrain linked a great video and here are a few more resources:

      1. File Based Importing (you can drag and drop as file containing your transactions right into YNAB!)
      2. Active entry using the mobile app.
      3. Scheduled transactions (for those regularly occurring transactions that you know about!)

We will continue to do all that’s in our power to push for a resolution. If you have any questions or if there's anything else we can do to help, please don’t hesitate to reach out! :)

    • Hi Spring Green Deer ! Welcome to You Need A Budget! Our Direct Import partner is still working on updating their integration with CIBC and we hope it will be restored eventually, but they let us know it will be a long term issue.

    • Nicole Yes I understand that. I just want to emphasize how extremely bad it is.

I opened my account 8/8/2019.  Its now 8/16/2019 and not a single credit card transaction has appeared.

Your service is essentially unusable for CIBC clients.

And as for the workaround, it would be such a huge waste of time if I had to manually enter the 100 or so transactions I get every month.   Manual upload is possible I guess, but yet again breaks the flow.

    • Spring Green Deer We are actively working to make this less of a pain point for users (and for us too, since we're all YNABers ourselves!). We're constantly exploring options with existing and new data providers to help with that. Direct import is something we do want to provide as a dependable feature!

For what it's worth I will say that while direct import is a really amazing feature (especially when it's working!), we feel our method is strong enough that your budget can still work very well without it. Lots of YNABers don't use direct import at all and they're still able to have and use an awesome budget. We actually wrote a blog post about this that goes into more detail.

When we introduced the feature, Direct Import was intended as more of a back-up for filling in where you may have missed (or forgot!). I hope you’ll explore our other transaction entry options during your extended trial, including File-Based Import. Of course, we'll continue to dig into this CIBC issue!

  • I, like many, was annoyed by this at first.  I came from a world of automatic imports, and not having it concerned me.

Part of YNAB's power is the mindset, and part of that mindset is actively working with your budget.  I sit down around every three days and work on my budget (the book suggests you shouldn't go budget crazy, you'll burn out), part of that is logging in to CIBC, downloading my transactions, and comparing my account totals to the totals in YNAB.

To download your transactions, do the following:

    1) Click "Download Transactions" on the left, two lines under "My Accounts"

    2) Choose the account you want first

    3) Select "All since last downloaded" (The first time you may need to pick a date, if you've been manually entering)

    4) Change "Financial management software:" to "Quicken"

    5) Click "Download Transactions"

    6) Repeat for each account you have.

You'll now have QFX fles, one for each account. Unless you changed the name, you'll have "cibc.qfx", "cibc(1).qfx" and so on. Again, one for each account.

Now open up YNAB, go to "All Accounts" and select "Import", click "Choose File", select the the first QFX file, and click "Open". Verify it's being imported in to the right account.  You'll see something like:

6 transactions will be imported from CHECKING: *********xxxx into:

    Chequing

I personally download in the order of how the accounts are listed in my online banking (Chequing, Joint, Credit Card, Line of Credit).  Now click "Import" and you're done. Repeat this for each account, verifying the transactions are going in to the right account. When you've done this once, YNAB remembers which set of transactions goes where, so you can skip this check in the future.

Now you can categorize (YNAB will do this automatically for future transactions from the same places), and approve, just like if things were auto imported. Except now, you've had even better control over your budget.

It seems like this is a lot to do each time you want to sit an look at your budget, but there are some good reasons to do this. First, it makes you engage with your accounts, and your transactions; you're not just clicking on line items. Second it lets you compare your account totals with the totals in YNAB, and reconcile if needed. Third, I find it helps to actually give me more insite in to my buget, which is really the same as my first and second points, but it's that important, right?

All of this extra "work" takes me about two minutes. I've certainly spent more time discussing it here in this thread than actually doing a manual import. Personally, I don't care about auto import any more, and have turned it off.

A couple of things to note:

CIBC is a bit slow (shocker) to actually have the transactions ready to download. Just because you see the line items on the account page, doesn't mean they'll come down with the export.

Do NOT enter an item manually, then do an import, you will have duplicates (and bad dreams).

Don't forget to delete the QFX files from your Downloads directory once you've imported them, or you'll end up with a pile of files, and a lot of confusion.
