Brand new to ynab

I've connected all my accounts, which gave me a starting balance and I was able to complete my budget. However, the only transactions showing are those that I've entered manually. I was under the impression that ynab would sync with my bank and purchases would show up from my bank where I would then file them in the correct budget category. Is that not how it works?

  • In my experience (with Bank of America) the syncing is not quite automatic. I usually connect first thing in the morning and transactions from the day or days before show up. But not usually within the same day. I'm not sure what the frequency is but my guess is around 12 hours or so. And if I'm not mistaken, the manual entry method is generally the recommended way to go. I use a combo of both and find it works pretty well for me now that I have a sense of when to expect updates to arrive. Hope this helps!

  • Manual entry is meant to be the primary method with the direct connect acting as a back up. Only cleared transactions will be imported which means several days after the transaction is made. In addition it will not import any transactions from before you started YNAB.

  • Hi Rita W. !

I'm happy to help! When you add a linked account, we first import just your Starting Balance.

After that, we’ll import transactions that clear on or after the date of your Starting Balance. Your financial institution may hold a transaction as “pending” for a day or two, but once they are cleared/posted, they should be available to import in YNAB within 24 hours.

In the web app, you’ll see a notification dot next to accounts that have transactions to import (or approve/categorize). When you select the account, you’ll see a banner along the top.

Clicking the banner will import new transactions and apply a search to show you just those transactions and any others that need to be approved or categorized. When you’re done, you can click the 'clear search' link at the bottom!

Nicole at YNAB Thank you, that was helpful. I noticed the dot on my credit card account and was able to manage those transactions. But there are still no transactions to be categorized coming in from checking account. It says my connection is good and was last updated 3 hours ago. Any idea what the problem might be?

    • Hi Rita W. !

I hope you don't mind me jumping in here! :)

Since your credit card has imported transactions, it sounds like that connection is up and running. Did you more recently use your credit card than your debit card? Give it another day or two to import those transactions (since the connection is still fresh). If you still aren't seeing them then, please let us know!

Faness  don't mind at all! I linked the account last Friday and have used my debit card many times.  when i put the cursor over the check mark next to the account it says that it has updated recently. What would happen if I un-linked the account and tried again. Would it mess up my budget? Wish there was a tech support that could walk me through it!

    • Rita W. That's actually a troubleshooting step! :)

To start, you’ll remove the connection to this financial institution:

      1. Select your budget name in the top left-hand corner and choose Manage Connections from the drop-down menu.

      2. Then Remove the connection(s) to this financial institution, confirm removal and close the window.

Then you’ll reconnect your account(s) to a fresh connection:

      3. Hover over the existing account (in the left sidebar) and click on the edit icon.

      4. Select Link Account > Add New Connection. Search for the financial institution, and follow the prompts.

If a transaction took place on Friday, it should have cleared no later than Monday with most banks and imported by today.

We do offer chat support! If you open the web app, you can send us a message (through the '?' icon on the bottom right hand corner) or reach out through the mobile app (also the '?' icon in the bottom right hand corner and you can select "Chat with Us"). It's a little late at the moment, but if you send a message we'll get back to you as soon as we're in! :)
