Credit Card Doesn't Show Allocated Money ?

I have a petrol card which I pay in full once a month, on the 15th.

So in April I filled  a tank the after the 15th, kr 667, had the same amount budgeted. Got the transaction linked to the petrol card.

May comes and I reconciled the card.

Added the bill to be paid from billing account. Now in my mind those money from April should have been allocated to the petrol card ? Or does the change of month messes up with that system, and I have to budget 667 to the petrol card in May?

Did I mess up somewhere? I messed up March sine I dind't fully understand how CC worked in YNAB, could that be a reason (although I though I had fixed it) ?

  • The kr 667 should definitely be sitting in the credit card payments section if it was a budgeted purchase.  Are you saying that money isn't there?

  • I know I must have messed up somewhere.

Coral Pony It looks like you have negative-budgeted money from the budgeted column of the Bunker Oil card in April. That's why there's nothing available in the payment category now.

Did you do something similar in March too?

Do you have the money available in your budget to go back to April and remove that negative-budgeted entry?

  • I can always switch some money around. Do you mean I should go back to April to put allocate money on the card? If so I can do that in May just as well.

I don't get what I have done wrong so please bear with me while I go through the explanation.

In February ^ March I spent petrol, put expenses on the category and linked it to the account/card.

Then I allocated money to the card. Which I paid in full both times. However since I put money on both the card and the category I realized I was messing it up (Thank you Nick True), So I tried to fix the error.

But okay, I'm all for trying again and forgetting old mistakes.

Should I for simplicity sake just allocate money on the May-card?

Then from the 15th , where I have to refill again, I will do what I have done before. Add expenses to the category, link to the account, and all will be sunshine and happiness ?

Coral Pony No, I mean it looks like you un-allocated money in April. It looks like you put -438 in the budgeted column of the credit card payment category in April.

I can't tell what the actual balance of the Bunker Oil card is from the screenshot you posted. It looks like the payment of kr 667 hasn't gone through yet but is a scheduled transaction.

Assuming that the balance of the card is currently kr 667 and you don't have any charges still pending, then you will need to allocate kr 667 to the budgeted column of the Bunker Oil payment category, and in your Bensin category, you will need to allocate money to the budgeted column for every purchase in that category that happens from now on.

That should allow you to be paid in full.

Coral Pony For the first month you use YNAB you will need to budget to the credit card payments category so you can pay for purchases you made before using ynab.  Once you have budgeted that first month then you no longer need to budget there.

Hmm, thanks bevocat You must be right, my "fixing" didn't fix anything, just moved the issue. I will put extra money on the card and budget this months petrol (bensin) as normal. June everything should be correctly.

satcook Thanks. Sadly it isn't my first, but my 4th month. Sounds very similar tho.

Thankfully errors are for learning :)
