Running Balance Column

Is there a way to add a running Balance Column, as you could do in YNAB 4. Yes I know there is Working Balance, however have having the ability to see the running balance at each transaction if very beneficial especially when trying to identify a transactional mistake

  • Yes, there is.  Its with the Toolkit.  It is a Google Chrome extension.  Do a google search, "YNAB Toolkit"

  • Hi Thank you for the heads up, I have installed the toolkit, however I see no option (obvious option) to enable running balances. Can you advise specifically which option in the toolkit must be enabled?

    Thanks in advance

  • On the left, there are choices of General, Account Screen, Budget Screen, ect....  Choose the Account Screen.  Scroll down to bottom of page and look for "Show Running Balance".  There are 3 options.  Choose the one you want.  Click on Save at the top.  Now go back to YNAB and refresh your browser.  You will get your running balances!

Sky Blue Filly Thanks for this. I just enabled the Toolkit extension but I don't see the settings you listed. Is there more than one toolkit to add?

  • Hi Orange Case !

The YNAB Register doesn’t have a running balance, but I appreciate you letting me know you’d like to see one! I’ve sent your request along to our Design Team so they know about it. To give you an idea of what happens next, they collect suggestions like this in a database. Pretty much every day, they look through that database while asking themselves questions—like “What problem does this solve?” and “Does this align with the YNAB method?“. This helps us plan for the future of YNAB, and we couldn’t be more grateful for your feedback!

We do have one other feature I thought you might be interested in—the Selected Total feature can help you figure out the balance of your account on any particular day:

        * In the search field, begin typing the date you’d like to check.

        * Click on “On or Before [Date]” from the drop-down menu.

        * Select all the transactions using the checkbox above the first transaction.

In the upper right corner, you’ll see the Selected Total value which is the balance of the account on that day.

Of course, you can use the Toolkit as well. 😊

Let me know if you have any more questions at all!

  • The running total option seems to have disappeared from the toolkit.  Having the running total for my accounts is essential for forecasting balances for future transactions each month.  I really hope that this can be incorporated into the base code for YNAB soon.

  • +1 for native development.  The toolkit is spectacular, but this feature should be available on all platforms, not just Chrome

      J. Lefeaux +1 for me.  I'm on Firefox because my Chrome started getting too slow for me (the dreaded "Waiting for cache" issue).  I want to see the running balance to make sure the account won't run out of money after all the future transactions in the month are applied.  Sure I could calculate but...

We have a checking account that doesn't have much.  Its use is solely for paying bills.  It will always be on the verge of running out of money.  I could super-fund it but...

Is there already a feature request for this?  Or is it currently being worked on?

  • I must say I find it quite offensive that they don't have a running balance column. I would love to know what they were thinking when they decided to take that feature out of the online version...

Slate Gray Falcon short-sighted, anyway. This & check numbers are two things that don't affect the method but do make life easier for anyone who is used to tracking accounts properly.

  • Sorry for resurrecting an old post, but just wanted to add thanks as it's the first thing I missed when I give YNAB online another look.

It was promoted by the big warning message to tell me that v4 won't work with macOS 10.14 :-( so I thought I should check out the online version again.  It looks to have improved from the early days, although it is disappointing to see some of the essential functions can only be achieved using an open-source 3rd party plugin.  It doesn't fill me with confidence that this is being developed to meet the need of the users.

I'm also struggling with the cost.  I get that software developers need to make a living, but paying almost $90 a YEAR for a budgeting app seems a little steep.  Maybe it's because I'm not using the full budgeting functionality and just using to track transactions, but I suspect as my 34-day trial draws to a close and macOS is launched I'll be looking to see what else is out there.

I don't think anything I've tried has ever been as good as Microsoft Money, other than the business versions I was paying £20/month for.  iCompta was OK but lost its way.  YNAB isn't really great at managing transactions, although I get the budgeting benefits.  Sage, FreeAgent, Quickbook all OK, but way too expensive for personal use.

Anyway, sorry for rambling and thanks for the post to the google extension!

Tan Saxophone You might as well use the free Mint if all you're doing is tracking. YNAB is a decent account register but a fantastic, all-world, life-changing budgeting tool. 🙂

    • Hi Tan Saxophone !

No need to apologize - we appreciate you taking the time to weigh in here! There isn't a way to see the running balance in YNAB, but we try to never say never! We're constantly looking into ways to improve the web version of YNAB. For now, account reconciliation is quick and easy so you can do it often to ensure YNAB always matches your current bank balance and use theSelected Total feature if you're trying to find your account balance on a certain day.

Please let us know if you have any questions! :)

Superbone It's not even a decent account register. There's no check number field.

    • Faness For many, it's not about reconciliation. It's about cash-flow decisions, which are necessary because we reduce to give up interest afforded by a multi-account setup.

It's a definite gap, which has seen any number of forum posts (and presumably feature requests). It is truly sad something this universally requested has gone unimplemented for almost 4 years.

  • In truth, I have to add my voice to this thread, the lack of running balance is very sad; and the primary reason I have not moved over yet. Considering my options. And the 'selected total feature" does not seem very user friendly unfortunately

  • Hey, all! I, too am here because of the demise of  YNAB 4 .  Altho my laptop wont be able to upgrade to the new OS, I figured it was time.  But no running balance?! I won't be able to balance my checkbook if there is no running balance - other than making a "reconciling transaction" in order to line things up.  At least, that is the only way I can figure.

Please, Admin, add this feature soon!

Lavender Network maybe you should try reconciling more often so that your transactions don't get away from you. I still use YNAB 4, but I rarely use the running balance and I still manage to reconcile my checking account all the time. I compare what is cleared in YNAB with what is cleared in the bank. If they match then I can click the use this amount and there is no need for a reconciliation transaction. For example, I reconciled my checking account yesterday. There is still an outstanding transaction from Oct 1 that hasn't cleared (super annoying, they auto debit my condo fee but it seems to go later and later every month), but since it isn't cleared in YNAB or at my bank, that posed no issue for the reconciliation, it just hangs out as an uncleared transaction in my register.

Lavender Network Don't bother waiting for YNAB to add a running balance. As others point out, you can add one yourself (in Chrome or Firefox) by installing the Toolkit for YNAB extension, which you can find by Googling it. It's worth using Chrome or Firefox for YNAB because the Toolkit Extension adds a lot of features that are missing in native YNAB.

Lavender Network I keep on top of my reconciling so never need a running balance for that but use it frequently for cash flow analysis. Thank god for the toolkit with running balance.

    • Herman Agreed. I find it faster to reconcile when sorted by outflow. But the running balance is crucial for cash-flow decisions. (For example, when can I move money to a higher interest account and how much?)

    • Hi Kimitino !

Thanks for weighing in here! :)

This is an older thread but our team is currently looking into adding a running balance feature! We can’t make any promises on when this feature will be available, but we’re working on it!

In the meantime, the Selected Total feature may come in handy and account reconciliation is quick and easy so you can do it often to ensure YNAB always matches your current bank balance. :)
