What should I do? Internship Retail

I started an unpaid internship (50-75 %) that most likely leads to a job in retail in 2 months or so.  My ambition is to study and not work in retail.  I have enrolled in distance studies to get in to college but I have a hard time getting student loans.
My finances are not that good and I am in debt. I am 20-25 years old. Travel time to and from work Mon to Friday is 3-4 hours per day total and work time is about 4-6 hours per day. So I guess its either this job that is okay but has really long travel time and is unpaid for a while or continue searching for some paid but not ideal job closer to where I live. I have no idea how to make a good decision.

  • The salary is important here. By "internship leading to a job in 2 months" does that mean a manager job that pays $40,000, or a lackey job that pays minimum wage? "Retail" can be a quite broad spectrum.

And what can you make at a job close to you that doesn't require the internship?

In general, it doesn't make sense to do an unpaid internship that won't lead to substantially different economic mobility. This goes double if you have a long way to travel to reach the internship, because that's even more time you are spending for no gain. If the internship would get you something that is far beyond what you'd otherwise be able to do, then taking it could be considered akin to paying for an education credential (the "paying" here would be the fact that you'd have to pay money to live while not receiving any income). But if the difference is small, and/or if you can live off a job you'd be able to get closer to home, I don't think there's much sense in taking the internship.
