Betterment Account Number(s)?

Hi. New to YNAB and Betterment. When I added Betterment for direct import into YNAB, I was asked to pick which account I wanted to added and was given four truncated account numbers. None of the four offered account numbers matched the two account numbers listed in Betterment. Also, none of the four account numbers matched the balance I had in Betterment. I've literally started both YNAB and Betterment within the last 48 hours. Is this a timing issue? Suggestions? Thanks in advance for the assistance.

  • Curious to see how this works out for you. I chose not to add Betterment because I didn't want to constantly be updating each small change is the account balances.

I created an unlinked account in YNAB and loaded my Betterment balances (not including my retirement accounts which I don't want to track I. YNAB). Then when I have transactions from my account I just add them as a transfer to Betterment.

    • Captain Taniele P.S. I love Betterment. Curious to hear your thoughts as you get familiar with it.

  • Hi Navy Blue Battery !

It's possible this could be a timing issue, but it seems odd you're seeing more accounts in YNAB then what you have with Betterment. If you log into Betterment, are you able to change your account nicknames? That should help us identify which account is which.

Captain Taniele mentioned it below, but for many investment and loan accounts, our Direct Import partner is only able to provide your current starting balance — or only certain types of transactions. That means most YNABers find they need to update their accounts as their balance changes even after connecting successfully.

We're looking to make improvements there, of course, but you may not find it worth setting up that Direct Import connection at this time — especially since investment and loan account balances are typically Tracking accounts (with very little daily activity), which don't affect your budget.

In my budget, I set up investment accounts as Tracking accounts, and create a Scheduled Transfer from checking for the contribution I make each month. Then, once every couple of months I'll update the balance. Updating the balances like this is quick and easy!
