Target Category Balance by Date

Hello

So last month I created a Goal to save £65 to cover by YNAB fee.

Last month I put aside £32.50 towards this bill.

This month the bill was actually £63.89, I have added it as a transaction and linked it towards this Category.

But now the system is saying:

Your £65.00 goal is due this month, and you’re short by £65.00. Budget another £65.00 to reach your goal target.

I don't understand?

  • The goal is only moderately intelligent - it just looks at your available balance in the category and compares it to the goal that's set.   Because you've paid the money your available balance in the category is £0 so the goal thinks you need to add £65.  But in the real world you reached your goal and then used the money as you intended and the goal is now superfluous.  If I was you I'd just delete the goal for this month, and then edit the goal in next months budget area to be £65 by the end of February next year and then it'll be encouraging you to save for the next payment rather than nagging you unnecessarily this month.

pling Sky Blue Hail I too find this very frustrating.  I would love to see some extra intelligence build into the tool. I scan down the budget column looking for anything not green and I keep getting reminded that I am short of funding for a category yet the reality is that I have budgeted for 12 months exactly as I planned and have just spent the money.Deleting the goal seems to be the only resolution but it does feel a little heavy handed.

I find that I can delete the 'Balance by Date' goal for June then step forward into July and add a new goal. It would be so easy to build this in.

    • Hi iwaddo !

Currently, Balance by Date goals are set to disappear on their own. Even if you don't delete them, if they're set to end in June they won't appear in July. If you need a certain balance by June, you can set the goal for May - so that the full balance is set aside by the end of May - and there won't be a reminder once you spend those funds in June. :)

Faness setting the goal by date to the month before is such a great and simple idea, why did I not think of that? 😉 I’m off to adjust all mine now. Do the help files say to do this so that new users get it right first time.

Should I read something exciting into your use of the word ‘currently’? It implies changes are coming, I’m getting excited already!

As always, thank you for your prompt and very helpful help, much appreciated.

Just to add, when saving for categories like birthdays or xmas I find that I have to use the Monthly  Savings Goal so that YNAB does not complain if we buy something in an earlier than the target month.

For example, we might buy xmas gifts throughout the year and using a Monthly Saving Goal allows this to work in YNAB, whereas, if we used the Target Category Balance by Date option YNAB would tell us we were falling short every time we spent against this category.

Thank you for mentioning that! I'm going to take a look to see if we can have that added to the documentation on goals! :)

Don't read too much into my wording. We are looking into improvements for goals, but I can't offer any details or when they'll be ready - so pretend I didn't say anything for now. ;)

  • hmm, the problem been is that yes I can delete the category.  However, as I am supposed to give every transaction a job what should I assign it too?

Sky Blue Hail Hi!  Don't delete the category.  Delete the goal this month.  Go to next month and set the goal again to have the money available by February of next year.  I hope this helps.

  • Hi All,

    I experienced something unusual today.

I created a goal from March to May to collect 415 000 HUF.
This means +138 333 HUF per month in addition to the balance.
I collect this money for some purpose separately from my money, so this money does not go to To Be Budgeted, but right into the Category balance.

First month in March, I got 154120 HUF, but budgeted zero, and the goal is still saying that I need to budget 86960 HUF more. Why? I assume this should be a bug. What do you think? Where can I report it?

    Thanks,
    Mesmes

Mesmes Any income you receive should be categorized as to be budgeted, then you would budget to the category. Categorizing an inflow to categories is considered negative spending by the system, not actual budgeting. It is not a bug, it is working exactly as expected. The goal is looking at the budgeted column, and you haven't actually budgeted anything there doing it the way you are.

    • Hi Mesmes ! Tobias is spot on here. We recommend that you categorize all income as Inflow: To be Budgeted, then you'll give those dollars a job in your budget. When the goal asks you to budget a specific amount each month, those dollars need to be added to the Budgeted column.

      Hi Tobias and Nicole,

I understand what you mean. I budget everything to To be budgeted, except this. Why? Because this money is not my income, I only collect it. I don't want it to be counted as income because it distorts my reports about my real incomes and expenses. Actually, I got the idea from Jesse. He mentioned this method in one of the Whiteboard Wednesdays. It was already years ago, don't ask which episode was that. :)

Tobias said, that the goal is looking at the budgeted column. Which is of course true, when it is set to Monthly Funding Goal, but when it is set to Target Category Balance (by Date), then it should not deal with the budgeted column, but should check the balance, which is the Available column, right? And the % number is shown right. I only find the budget more amount weird and therefore the color of the goal as well.

Anyway, if it would only check the budgeted column, and see that I budgeted zero, then it should show that I need to budget 138 333 HUF more, and not 86960 HUF. I don't really get the maths where this number came from.

    • Thanks for clarifying Mesmes ! If that money is not your income and you're categorizing it there—does the category need a goal?

It sounds like we may need to dive a little deeper on this one! If you’re up for it, go ahead and enable Support Access for your account. Once you’ve done that, let me know—and mention whether you’d like to continue the discussion here or via email instead.

    • Mesmes I wanted to check in and see if you'd like us to look closer at what's going on with that goal? Let me know and we'll go from there!

      Hi Nicole ,

Sorry was a busy weekend, but I am back. :) I granted Support access.
Yes, it needs a category goal, because I want to see when we have the necessary amount.
Maybe it is better to continue in email. Thanks for checking!

    • Hi Mesmes !

I took a look but Support Access isn’t enabled for your account. It could have either expired or didn’t save. When you have a moment, can you enable Support Access again?

Let us know once you do, and we’ll give it another try!

    • Mesmes Thank you! I took a look but I didn't see any current goals like what you described. In general, that goal should work how you described - the Target Category Balance by Date goal should update based on the Available amount. If there was an Available amount for the category before you created the goal, that would be taken into account and might change the numbers you were expecting to see.

If there's a specific category you'd like us to look at, just let us know!
