Deleted Category

Hello!

So, I found out that I could add a credit card to my budget, and, because I use one credit card a lot, I decided to add that in. I watched a video on it first to make sure I was cool with it. It seemed simple enough! I added the card and deleted a category that I had used for that card before. I hadn’t used the category much because I paid my card off almost every day and would put the payments into the categories of the things I used the card for. Now, when I deleted this category I had four transactions that suddenly had no place to go. I called a friend and he suggested I try deleting them to see what happened. I proceeded to delete all of them. I had a sum in my “to be budgeted” category, and after I deleted these transactions, I noticed I had a considerable amount more in that category. The main problem is that I cannot remember what exactly I had in the “to be budgeted” before so I cannot replicate the deleted transactions to fix the problem and get my account back to what I actually have. If any one has a solution, please let me know ASAP! Thank you so much!

  • If you haven't closed the browser window, try hitting the undo button repeatedly until you get back to where you were.

  • I'd also recommend hiding categories and accounts, not deleting them. Closing them removes them from the list, but keeps the historical transactions and payments in your budget so things like this don't happen. :)

If you're unable to do what monkeyhanger helpfully suggests, you could try emailing YNAB directly and asking them if it's possible to roll back to your budget to a date/time before you made these changes. Good luck!

    • Hi Anarane !

Unfortunately, while we are able to recover budgets that are deleted by mistake, we aren't able to restore a budget to a previous point in time.

Faness I suspected that might have been the case, but good to know for sure. Thanks.

    Ouch!  That's a dicey one.

Like Anarane said, going forward, you want to hide categories, not delete them, if they've ever had funds or transactions in them or it'll make a mess.  Obviously that doesn't help the current situation though.

The only thing I can think to do to find out a total amount that should have belonged in the categories is to compare your bank balances to your YNAB balances, and whatever the total amount is, is probably the total of your CC payment transactions.

For instance, if your bank says you have $10,000 in it (I wish mine had that much - maybe someday), and YNAB says that you have $11,234.56, I would guess that the total amount of your CC Payments was $1,234.56.

  • Hi lovelessmrswilson !

I think TheTabby is right. It sounds like those deleted transactions were your credit card payments. If you check your bank statements and compare to YNAB, the total of them may match how far off your account balance currently is.

When you have a moment, reconcile that account to get things back on track. :)

  • I would simply reconcile accounts to today's balances, making a balance adjustment where needed. Then zero out TBB. There's little need to fix up the past.
