Need some help getting started with budgeting

Hello - I've been using YNAB for a few months now. The data entry features are great and I can use the reports to see where I'm spending money.  I really like the mobile app.

However, the budgeting process completely mystifies me. I have a certain amount of total spending I want to do every month, spread across a couple dozen categories. I don't want to have to manually enter the budget amounts every month.  I also would like to accrue expenses monthly for planned major expenses (such as a car repair or house maintenance). I am tracking expenses from the start of 202 and would like to set my budget for the calendar year as well.  I can't figure out how to do these simple tasks. While YNAB seems like a great program, the budgeting piece appears to be a huge amount of work.  Can anyone suggest a tutorial to get started? Thanks.

Watch the videos and sign up for the live workshops. They'll walk you through step-by-step and answer your questions. They're free and you can attend them multiple times if you need to. They were a great way for me to get started a year ago.

  • Hi Peter G !

Welcome to YNAB and to the forum - we're glad you're here! :)

In YNAB, your budget is a plan for the money you have right now—but you may want to plan ahead for what to do with money you'll get in the future. We call this a budget template but, at any given time, we don't suggest budgeting further than your current funds will take you.

When you have a moment, watch our video on How to Create a Budget Template or How to Create a Budget Template on Mobile, or take a look at the Set Up Your Budget workshop. Both will teach you how to use scheduled transactions and goals to outline priorities and plan for future expenses.

The Quick Budget feature will allow you to quickly enter the budgeted amounts you want from month-to-month.

And if you want to dive in deeper, check out Create a Budget Template in our Starting Your YNAB Budget video course. :)

    •  I found that using YNAB requires a mindset shift.  We all had our own ways of budgeting beforehand and I know that it took me some time to wrap my head around how YNAB thinks about it.  I found through reading articles  like Faness  has suggested and exploring the forums, I gained a better understanding and made the program work for me while adhering to their philosophy.  Its definitely a journey.  Good luck!
