Do I have to set the budget amount for each category manually per month?

If I budget my monthly rent, do I have to do it manually for each month or is there a way to budget it automatically?

  • You can set goals for each of those categories (budget x amount per month) and then use the underfunded button when your pay arrives to budget them. Check out Nick True's videos on YT and the article how to set up a budget template: https://docs.youneedabudget.com/article/915-budget-template

  • Hi Magenta Cartridge !

It sounds like you're looking for our Quick Budget feature! That allows you to quickly enter the amounts Budgeted Last Month, Spent Last Month and others (like the Underfunded option Sarah mentioned). Take a look there and let me know if you have any questions! :)

  • I've been using YNAB for a lot of years. I use the Quick Budget feature every month, and have a huge number of Scheduled Transactions and Goals which both feed into the Quick Budget.

Even with that, after I do the Quick Budget, I review the budgeted numbers line by line, because Quick Budget has some quirks and needs to be gently corrected. It only takes a few minutes a month.

  • For monthly fixed amounts, a recurring/scheduled transaction with the Quick-Budget Underfunded works a treat, as it makes an implicit goal.

The end goal of many is to be able to not use any of the income received in February for expenses occurring in Feb. This allows you to budget all of March at one go with a couple clicks.
