"Needed for Spending" Target Options

Trying to figure out if there is a difference in behaviour (behavior? 馃槈) between "Needed for Spending / Monthly / 20th" and "Needed for Spending / By Date / 20-12-2021 / Repeat Monthly"?

TIA

  • When you create a Monthly Needed for Spending target by the 20th of every month, you will be prompted by YNAB to assign your target amount monthly.  As you assign money, you can also spend from this category without the category becoming underfunded.

In your example, if you set up a "Needed for Spending / Monthly / 20th" target this month, you'll be prompted to meet the target amount this month and again each month following.

When you create a Needed for Spending target by a certain date and tell YNAB to repeat monthly, you'll be prompted to assign your target amount in all months leading up to that certain date initially, then the target will begin to repeat monthly in the month following the date you added. As you assign money, you can also spend from this category without the category becoming underfunded.

In your example,  if you set up a "Needed for Spending / By Date / 20-12-2021 / Repeat Monthly" target this month, you'll be prompted in November and December to meet your initial target amount, and then the target will begin repeating every month starting in January 2022, with the expectation that you'd meet that target amount each month from then on out.

  • Thanks Dela .

Just to confirm my understanding - this means that if the first month specified in Needed for Spending target by a certain date and tell YNAB to repeat monthly happens to be the current month, then there is no practical difference between the two targets.

    Am I correct?

    • Navy Blue Camera Yes! If your first "By Date" date is in the same month you created the Target (for example: $100 Needed For Spending by date, set for 11/30, and repeating monthly), it would end up functioning the same way as setting a $100 monthly Needed for Spending Target starting in this month.
