Mortgage Payment Every Two Weeks

Hey there,

I make mortgage payments every two weeks. How do I reflect that in YNAB when my options are weekly or monthly? I'd rather reflect it as something I pay every two weeks since I also receive my paychecks every two weeks.

Thanks!

  • If you are talking about the scheduled transaction to show that payment is coming out every two weeks, that is available. I also pay my mortgage biweekly so I have two separate recurring transactions set up.

So, create the first one for the payment date (let's say it is today) and set the recurring schedule to every four weeks. Create a second recurring transaction with a date of Oct 29 with a recurring schedule of every four weeks. That will show your mortgage payments every two weeks.

MadDog there is no need to schedule 2 different transactions. You can just set up the recurrence for 1 transaction as "Every Other Week".

jenmas True. But then I can only see the next transaction in the Future section. By doing two transactions I can see both of them in the next month. Minor point but it is helpful because if the budgeting is not right for some reason, it pops up. And once the first one is done in a three pay month, it pops up reminding me it is a three pay month.

MadDog Yes. I have my paychecks set up like that (each every 4 weeks, 2 weeks apart). I also have a payment on the 1st and 15th set up like that. I like to see a full month in advance. Makes cash flow easy as well when you can look a month ahead and know you are covered.

  • Ahhh I think I'm following you. So you essentially have "Mortgage" entered twice in your category?

Hot Pink Cornet Yes, I have the scheduled transaction in my register twice. I also set up the target for a monthly amount so that I am saving up for the third payment that happens twice a year. It sometimes takes a bit to get it settled due to timing issues but once done, it is super simple.

Monthly amount that I contribute is (Monthly payment x 26)/12. That tells me how much I need to set aside each month to fund the two payments and start building for those third payments. You might need to add a bit extra at the beginning as you won't have the entire time to build it up. My target is a monthly contribution so it does not change.

  • Hot Pink Cornet If you set up a scheduled transaction that recurs every other week, your category will prompt you to assign money to cover those transactions even if you don't have a Target in place! Read more about this in the Upcoming Transactions in your Budget section of this help doc.
