You can reconcile any time

Just thought I’d mention that you can reconcile an account any time, not just at the end of the month or when you get the monthly statement. I reconcile my accounts regularly and it usually takes less than 5 minutes. I think it’s this easy for me because I reconcile often, usually any time I log into my online bank account.  This way it can’t get too far off and you’re not faced with a huge task.

  • I need to get in the habit of actually doing the reconcile action on my accounts.  The only ones I've actually done it on are the tracking accounts (like Car Loan and 4023b) to update them to the current value.  Everything else I just check the transactions and call it good...actually doing a reconcile would clean out a bit of clutter since it defaults to not showing reconciled transactions...

      TechieM2 and it’s strangely satisfying.

  • Great point, MXMOM ! More frequent reconciliation can be very helpful, and gets easier the more often you do.

I like to think of reconciling as a check point, and if anything is off—all I need to do is compare transactions between now and the last locked/reconciled one. A handful of transactions is faster than a whole month!

For anyone that struggles with reconciling, creating a regular Budget Routine is a game changer.

  • YES!  I used to wait but discovered how much faster everything works when you do it at least weekly.  Then, if something is off, you have far fewer transactions to review to find the error.  Changing my habits in this area has been a huge help to stay on track.
