Duplicate budget

Is there a way to create a duplicate budget?  I want to make a copy of my budget with the history intact so that I can play around with a couple of different scenarios.  It's not the kind of thing I feel comfortable doing with just the undo function to go back but I also don't want to wipe out all the balances and transactions and have to reenter so Fresh Start won't work.

  • Hi Rihannsu !

There isn't really an easy way to create a duplicate. You can do a Fresh Start (to carry over your accounts and custom categories), then connect your accounts in the Fresh Start budget and pull in past transactions (to do that you can use File Based Importing or change the date of the starting balance transaction).  File Based Importing has the ability to import a further range of transactions, whereas changing the date of the starting balance can only go back 6 weeks.

As you mentioned, I wouldn't suggest trying this with Undo because it's easy to accidentally save over your true budget.

If you still have questions, please don't hesitate to ask!

  • I just wanted to ask if there's any update on this?

Trying out different scenarios was easy with the old app - you just made a copy of the file.  The lack of any way to try scenarios on the web app is a significant restriction.

I don't have any official updates to share here just yet, but this option is on our radar! :)

I want this as well. I've got a file with transactions from my bank accounts that I'd like to try and import but I don't trust it and am afraid it'll wreck my manually added known-to-be-good transactions. I'd feel much safer trying this out first in a copy of my budget that also contains my manually added and approved transactions

Coral Lobster It's on their radar, but somewhat less important than integrating YNAB with a system none of us would have heard of if YNAB weren't integrating with it.

As long as YNAB prioritizes stuff no one asked for above no-brainer stuff that should have been included at product roll-out, my eyes will be open to see whether there is a viable competitor.  So far, no; but I have a competing product that will do if YNAB totally screws up and takes their software out of the "functional" category for me.  Most likely scenario for this is, Toolkit designers burn out on keeping up with YNAB random changes to the infrastructure and quit maintaining Toolkit, while YNAB fails to implement any of the many things in Toolkit that really ought to be part of the base package then randomly makes Toolkit non-functional.

Patzer I am in your camp, looking for a reasonable alternative as YNAB continue down the current path. It would be bad if toolkit went away, although they have taken on some features (eg running balance) there are plenty of others that would be so easy to introduce but are not.

  • I also vote that YNAB please add the option of being able to create a duplicate of an existing budget.  Please!

    • HowLobb Please send this idea over to our Product team for consideration, by submitting a Feature Request. That way, the right folks will count your vote! ;)

    • Dela  Please stop asking us users to submit Feature Requests for the product team to consider elements that should be BASIC and part of the product.   It makes me believe there is no intention of getting them into the product.   Things such as importing a file into YNAB with Categories is VERY basic...  The possibility of making a copy of a Budget also...   Most of us use features that are in the Toolkit and not in YNAB!!!   Those folks are more responsive to users requests than YNAB...

Rick Thomas plus there are a large number of requests for copy budget as this WAS a feature and was removed in the transition to nYnab from YNAB4. But unfortunately users requesting a feature is one of the ways it might make it onto the product roadmap, so if you want it back you have to ask in the right place

  • I am wanting to see the impact of my making an additional prinicipal payment of Xamount of money on my mortgage, to see how those different scenarios would impact my month-to-month living, as well as seeing how my amended mortgage loan payoff would affect my future life. If there currently exists a way of duplicating my budget, please advise. Right now, it is entirely guess work.

    • Skarecrow Use Make a Fresh Start.

Rename the fresh start budget to Sandbox (or whatever you want).

Rename the archived budget back to your original budget name.

Move Light Sound Life so after playing around in the Sandbox, for ideas, etc., I reopen and budget normally in the ORIGINAL BUDGET?

Move Light Sound Life Hey, MLSL, just did that and it worked perfectly! Surprisingly, I can slaughter my extra principal payment and still going on living! Just saved myself 15 years on my mortgage interest! Thanks!

Sky Blue Pilot Like Ceeses intimated, there’s no reason to be afraid since it just makes a new budget based on your old one and keeps the old one.
