Categorizing Expenses?

Hi all,

I know categories are a personal thing, but I guess I'm wondering how y'all would categorize expenses that might normally be considered under one category (for instance, false eyelashes or a wig under "beauty and hygiene"), but that are being purchased for a health need (i.e. being purchased because I'm undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer. Would you still categorize them under "beauty and hygiene," or would you move them to a medical expenses category?

  • This is personal preference. If it were me, I'd put it under medical. Reasoning being I wouldn't expect to have this as part of my regular Beauty category and wouldn't want to expect the expense in the future. Sorry you're going through this. Wishing you the best.

  • If it's a possibly deductible medical expense, I'd want to make sure I categorize it separately for visibility.

nolesrule agreed. I have two medical categories. One that's for deductions and one that's still health realted but not deductions. Then at tax time, I can check if I should file itemized or not.

    • Ben Khaki Storm Thanks, Ben. I might try doing that, though, again, I very much doubt I'll ever end up itemizing these. My health insurance plan is (thankfully) one of the best in this marketplace, so my expenses, while they are adding up now b/c of cancer treatment, are largely actually covered by my FSA funds and the funds I received from my health plan for visiting my provider for an annual physical.

Black Orchid Think about it, I suppose if I always added a note in the comments, like taxes, I could run a filter at the end of the year.

    • Ben Khaki Storm I solved the problem of finding the taxable records with hashtags in the memo fields.  #tax2019 is all I need to find everything in All Accounts.  From there it's pretty trivial.  Not as elegant as having categories but I only do this once a year.

  • Thanks, Heatskitchen and  nolesrule  I don't itemize my taxes (at least not since the latest changes), but was leaning towards medical categorization, and wanted to hear others' thoughts. Thanks for sharing. :)

  • It's personal, but I would put that under health need because you would not have ordinarily purchased those items at that time.

  • I don’t know if you are a “blessings and prayers to you on your journey” person or a “#*%^ cancer” kind of person, (or both; I am both!) but now that you have your budgeting advice, sending whatever flavor of good sentiments your way.
