Latest Android app update: Dark Mode?

The latest update for the Android app said it included Dark Mode. How do we turn that on for Android? On the Apple app it is based on the phone being set to "dark mode", but I can't find an equivalent in the settings on my phone.

  • adriana01 We're testing this feature for Android, and it isn't available in the latest public release. We'll make an announcement with the details when it goes live!

The most recent iOS app (2.10) included updates for iOS Dark Mode. You can find more information here.

Nicole Ok. I can't tell when the updates are Beta or a public release. I sent a message thru the app that the instructions for iOS do not apply to Android (at least not my phone)

adriana01  Android phones are all over the board on implementing the latest updates.  My pixel 3 has the dark theme but the ynab app doesn't yet recognize it.

    • adriana01 Dark Mode for Android hasn't been released yet. We're still taking a look at it but we can't say for certain when it will be ready for public release.

Faness I got a beta release that said in the update notes it included Dark Mode. I can't tell which releases are Beta or regular.

  • I got the latest version from the play store and said it included dark mode. Although it did change the styling I couldn't find something where the accounts screen would be black.

Slate Blue Pilot (2903ac015cdb) It changes based on whether your phone has Dark Mode turned on, which requires the latest version of Android. It would have been nice if this beta had included a message either in-app or on Google Play to that effect.

    • adriana01 Thank you for that feedback! I'll pass this along to our Design Team. You're right, if a new feature requires certain steps to activate, we want to make that clear.

    • Hi Orange Octopus !

Are you having trouble with Dark Mode?

Dark Mode is available for both iOS and Android, available on iOS13 and Android 10 or later. Make sure to check the App or Play Store and make sure you have the latest version of the YNAB app installed!

From there, Dark Mode can be enabled in your phone settings. It will come on automatically when you switch between dark and light! :)

    • Orange Octopus some phones dont have dark mode enabled and depending on the manufacturer maybe not. My s10 got the new feature a few months after this post. Samsung seems to be rolling it out but not sure.

  • Ah myissue is my device's aren't yet at Android 10.  My phone and tablet do have OS level dark mode turned on already. One Plus 5T and Tab S6.

  • It would be better to decouple this from the OS. My phone won't let me turn it's dark mode on and gives an error saying it cant be turned on while using a theme.

    • Hi Navy Blue Foal !

Sorry for the trouble! Would you mind submitting a Feature Request to let our Product Team know how that option is behaving for you? It seems odd that a theme (something programmed to work with your phone) would stop another option (dark mode) from working, but definitely something for our team to take into consideration! :)

I agree about decoupling.  That way there would be feature parity for all app users.  The market share of users on Android 10 is likely quite small.  It should be an in app option.
