New to YNAB - what to do when to money that was budget has been withdrawn from account?

I budgeted for some withdrawals for today, which happened. Money got taken out of my bank account. How do I make it visible in my ynab budget that the money has been spent and is no longer available to me? Either for the original purpose or for anything else?

  • When you enter the transaction in your account in YNAB, YNAB show the money as spent in the category you assign.

  • Where do I do that? For example, it shows I have $400 budgeted and is green. I do not have my bank account added to ynab. Do I need to do that? I thought it was possible to do so without adding my bank account

Cornflower Blue Falcon You need to add your bank account. You don't need automatically to download transactions, but without an account of some kind, there's nowhere to record spending.

Cornflower Blue Falcon Yes, all of your accounts that you spend from (or save to) including savings accounts should be in YNAB.

Cornflower Blue Falcon When you withdraw the money, in the bank account (that isn't connected), add a transaction, categorize it for what it is and that will draw down the budget.

Cornflower Blue Falcon You can even do this for transactions that will automatically be taken out, not just physical cash or cheques.

Cornflower Blue Falcon The going out happens with transactions in the accounts whether or not they are linked. Next time you get paid, add a transaction in that account and call it "to be budgeted" and then go to your budget screen and allocate it.

    • Cornflower Blue Falcon I wanted to check in and see how things are going. 🙂 It sounds like you've added an account, and budgeted those dollars. Nice job! Here are the steps to add an account just in case. Make sure to add your savings account, and any others you regularly spend from too!

Next, you'll add spending transactions as they happen. And add new income like this. Let us know if we can do anything to help you along the way!
