Capital One Credit Card

I have a capital one credit card that I am trying to connect for direct import. I connected my capital one account but my credit card is not listed as an account, just my savings and checking.  What do I need to do to get the credit card connected?

  • Hi Ashleymcdee !

Which Capital One option did you select when adding your account? We've heard from quite a few users that Capital One is making some platform changes, so that could be the reason that account isn't listed. If you're connected to the Capital One 360 option, try connecting to the "Capital One" option.

If that doesn't do the trick, email [email protected] so that support can take a closer look. If that account still doesn't show up they can ask our Direct Import partner to investigate! :)

I'm going to mark this as closed. If you have any other questions about Capital One, you can continue the thread here and feel free to mention me in your response!

  • Faness I'm re-opening the thread since it seems Capital One 360 is no longer available in the Direct Import.  There is "Capital One", however, and I can connect and see my account, but it will not download any transactions. I've also allowed personal finance software access by generating an access code in the Capital One website, but, again, YNAB doesn't ask for the access code nor does it ever download any transactions.

Have other YNABbers experienced this issue recently?

    • Hey Tan Disk !

Capital One updated things on their end not too long ago so that Capital One and Capital One 360 accounts could be accessed from the same log in, so our Direct Import partner followed suit. There aren't any widespread issues for Capital One at the moment, but you should see your transactions importing. If you just reconnected the account, it can take a day for your transactions to trickle over, but if it has been longer than that, let me know and we can take a closer look at things! :)

Faness Thanks for the response.  Yes, I've waited for more than 24 hours after reconnecting several times in the past year.  I've had the account since March 2017 and it's never downloaded transactions.  Interestingly, I linked the same account to Personal Capital and I was asked for my Capital One access code.  After I entered the the username, password, customerID, and access code, Personal Capital has listed all the transactions.

I blame it on the Direct Import partner in this instance.

    • Tan Disk You connected the account in March of last year? That's definitely longer than we'd ever want to see a direct import issue! I took a look and noticed your connection is through our old direct import provider. I just sent you an email about switching to our new provider if you're up for it! :)

  • I am trying to connect a CapitalOne credit card account. It seems fine after entering my credentials, however, when asked to select either text or email for verification, it throws up a screen showing it can't connect. Any thoughts?

  • I'm also having this issue. I started a new budget, and have been able to relink all of my prior accounts, including a Capital One 360 savings account, but when I try to connect my Capital One Quicksilver card, or to add Capital One as a financial institution to see if my card is available to add, I can't log in. I'm definitely using the appropriate login credentials -- curious what could be going wrong.

    • Jenn C I apologize for the delay here! We only receive notices for posts if we're mentioned on them after they've been marked as answered.

I took a look and I see one Capital One account that's successfully connected and one that's running into an error. I wanted to make sure those aren't the same account. Were you able to get things reconnected?

  • Confirming that I also have an issue.

    • Access code is activated on Capital One
    • Capital One credit card works as intended
    • Capital One loan will not connect
    • Have added another tracking account and tried to connect there with no luck

Really hope this issue is resolved soon! It's been a frustrating couple of months.

    • Slate Blue Display Sorry for the delay here! We don't receive notices for threads that have been marked as Answered unless we're mentioned in a comment, so I'm just seeing this! I took a look and I see you have one Capital One account connected. Are you still having trouble adding your separate loan account?

If so, let me know and we'll go from there!

  • I've been having issues with Capital One, I think the problem is on their end.  I was logging in and out of the account multiple times the other day and then all of a sudden it told me my login information was wrong.  The Direct Import was working . . . then again all of a sudden, no luck, re-entered the information (which hadn't changed) and it started working again.

    • Silver Robot Sorry for the delay here!

I took a look at your Capital One account and I'm seeing an error on your account which typically means your MFA (security questions, one-time password, etc.) was answered incorrectly.

When you have a moment, click the “Import(!)" button at the top of your account register, and answer your authentication questions (if there are any to answer) from there.

If it still won’t connect, can let me know if anything is amiss with the authentication questions (i.e. a one-time passcode you don’t ever receive, or a question you don’t recognize)? Then I can let our Direct Import partner know!

    • Faness Thanks for checking into that.  I had given up on it and was importing them manually.  It seems to be working now.

  • I have Capitol One 360, regular Cap One checking, and Cap One credit card.

I have no problem with 360. Routing number is 031176110 and I have to enter a special code (ie not my login info).

Cap One checking worked until a few weeks ago using just the regular login info (ie not a special code).  YNAB had stored the login info.  When I try to re-connect to Cap One checking using the stored login info the only option I am given is to connect to the credit card, which I'm not interested in doing.

When I try to attach to Cap One checking using the routing number listed on the website, 065000090, YNAB tells me there is no banking institution using that routing number.

I don't use my Cap One checking for much so I will continue to update it in YNAB manually until this gets resolved.

You guys still need to look into this.  Could Cap One have changed routing numbers recently and YNAB hasn't caught up to that??

I LOVE YNAB.  In the last year, the importing/updating for my cap one 360 account has improved to the point where I NEVER need to manually update anything.  It really works well now.

    • Hi Cadet Blue Drill ! Sorry for the delay here! When a thread is marked as Answered, we only see new comments when we're mentioned in a comment, so I'm just now seeing your message.

I took a look and I see you've synced to the 360 account but not the regular Capital One account. Are you still receiving an error there? It says the account is connected, but you haven't synced it in your budget. If it's still giving you trouble, let me know and we'll go from there! :)

    • Faness  Thanks for your reply!  Yes, nothing has changed.  In summary, I have 1 Cap One 360 account. That works great - I import from it frequently.  I have 2 Cap One Regular accounts: a checking account and a mastercard.   I do not want to connect to or import from the mastercard.  Don't care about it.  I want to connect and import from the checking account.  I used to be able to do it, but it stopped working months ago.

MyYNAB set up is as follows:

2 accounts - one is Cap One 360 and one is Cap One Essential Checking.  I used to be able to connect to both and import from both.

Here is how I reproduce the error

      1) From YNAB accounts page I select Cap One Essential Checking and click Import

      2) YNAB prompts me to select the type of import -- Under set up direct import I click Connect

      3) On the Link Accounts popup it shows Cap One 360 connected, Cap One (0/1 Connected) and prompts me to choose a financial institution to link from. I click on Cap One. (screenshot)

      4) It asks me to select which account I'd like to use.  It only presents the credit card account as an option so I know it's logging in.  There is no option to connect the essential checking account (screenshot)

The cap one essential checking doesn't get a ton of traffic so I maintain it manually in YNAB, but I'd rather use direct import.  it works really well for the Cap One 360 account.

    • Cadet Blue Drill Thank you for those details and for tagging me (so sorry I missed this the first time)!

It sounds like the connection is working, but never picked up that second account, so let's try resetting that connection. Click on the 'Remove' option next to the Capital One connection in your screenshot (you won't lose any of your account information when you do this). Then click 'Add Another Connection', search for Capital One and re-add that account (it'll have you log in again).

If that second account still doesn't show up, let me know and I'll have our Direct Import partner investigate! :)

Cadet Blue Drill  That is the correct routing number for Capital One LA based accounts.  It has not changed.  As mentioned earlier, I am noting some platform changes that are impacting some users but not all.   As my husband is getting a different UI experience with his login credentials vs. mine.   He only has Capital One whereas my profile has multiple account types across LOBs.   Capital One 360 and Capital One Bank are two different entities, as is Capital One credit card... They have an authorization layer over the top so you can use a single login credential.  I need to test behavior with Cap One 360.

  • To be fair, I'm having troubles getting transactions in YNAB and another online financial software (for business accounting).  I also believe it's on either the Direct Import partner side or Capital One.  Very likely Capital One's side.  However, a few weeks back, I used a very large online accounting software company's product and encountered no issues with Capital One.  Very confusing...

Gray Saxophone I resolved the issue by leaving Capital One Bank and joining Chase Bank. Everything works perfectly on all my financial software after joining Chase.

  • Hi Faness  - I am trying to connect Capital One Personal Banking (savings account) and got through past the secondary authentication code.  Now I am at the screen where I should be able to choose which accounts I want to recognize, but there is nothing listed.  It has the headers of "Account" and "Balance" with nothing below them.  Any ideas?  Thanks.

    • Hi Cornflower Blue Falcon !

Since you aren't seeing accounts listed under the Capital One Personal Banking option, can you try connecting back to the Capital One 360 option? Once you connect back to that option, I can check for any errors and we'll go from there! :)

    • Faness It seems to be working now when I went with Capital One 360 and also (finally) noticed that it was asking for access code, not password.  Maybe some big bold wording of "this is NOT your password" might help others in my situation?  Capital One is the only institution I deal with that does not use password as at least a first step when logging in elsewhere.  Thanks!

    • Cornflower Blue Falcon Happy to hear you were able to get connected! We have a few institutions with special requirements like that and we're hoping to make those more clear in the future!

  • Faness  I'm wondering if it is normal to have to authorize my Capital One credit card every time I use the YNAB app. I'm asked to enter a security code daily. Can you offer some insight on this? I'd love to know if there's something I can do to avoid this.

    • Hi MM Chek !

I’m sorry you’re having to re-authenticate your accounts so frequently—I know it’s frustrating. We’ve been digging into this issue and we learned that, at this time, certain security protocols require repeated re-authorizations. In other words, they’re expected. This is dependent on the institution, so you may not see this with all of your accounts.

This is great for security, of course, but not so great for the import experience. In some cases, we’ve found those will slowly start to subside, but we can’t guarantee it since each connection is unique.

We’re hopeful this will improve as our Direct Import partner develops more direct connections, but right now (and for the foreseeable future) it is expected.

Sorry for the inconvenience! If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to let me know! :)
