Available to Spend Does Not Match Bank Balance

I have had several issues over the last year using YNAB where my available to spend amount will regularly end up being higher than my account balances. I started a fresh budget this month and already my available to spend is 5.37 over my account balance. This shows when looking one month ahead and with no overspending in the current month. I emptied out all of my buckets and had the same amount pop up. All transactions are accounted for and reconciled with my bank.

How can this be fixed and avoided in the future?

  • If your account balances are all correct, it’s most likely that you don’t have enough budgeted for your credit cards. Did you budget for their starting balances?

    • Superbone I did, yes. Credit cards are all currently budgeted for appropriately and accounts are correct with that bank as well.

Maroon Stallion I don’t know what to tell you then. Tough to know how to help you without seeing what you’re doing. You’ll have to work with support to figure out what you’re doing wrong. One other thought, make sure you are not negative in future months.

  • The money in the budget always matches the combined cash from ALL your accounts. Are you expecting that the total of some *subset* of categories (possibly even a single category) should match a given account balance?

Where are you getting the Available to spend figure?

Do you have a savings account as part of the budget?

  • On the other hand, if there’s anybody that can help you figure it out without seeing what you’re doing, it’s dakinemaui . He’s asking great questions and he knows the system inside and out.

  • So I managed to figure out what was happening, sort of. Thank you to the two that answered trying to trouble shoot. I didn’t realize my screen shots didn’t attach. The issue I ended up with was there was a closed account that still had a balance in it and once I cleared that it fixed my budget.

Maroon Stallion Ah, great! Glad you figured it out. Yep, we’ve heard that one before too. Also, hidden categories with balances could affect things too. We should make a list of all the potential pitfalls.
