Budgeting for future transactions

Is it possible to get YNAB to calculate the amount monthly to save for a category that has future scheduled transactions.

For example, I have two credit card fees to pay. One in March and one in April.

Given it's July I would like it to show me what amount I need to save to have the funds when needed.

While this would be a simple thing for a category of two items, one that contains a lot more and with new and deleted entries on a monthly basis would be more of a challenge.

Thanks

  • Not that i am aware of but you can make two separate goals of target by date and it will do that match. Multi in one category has been requested but not an option at this time.

  • Thanks, anyone at YNAB do you have plans to have an auto goal to keep a category flat via monthly savings to avoid a big surprise ?

    Thanks

The caveats are if you spend money in that category, YNAB doesn't update to replace that money by the date, and if you don't spend the money to 0 in the month of the target date, whatever is left when the month rolls over counts to that goal.

On the positive side, if you can't put in the full amount or need to WAM from the category, the amount you need in future months updates to accommodate that.

  • Yeah i don't know the amount. Would like YNAB to deal with it.

    • berksgr How would you like YNAB to do that? It should pull a number of of thin air?

You started by asking about scheduled transactions. Do you not have amounts for those transactions? The target would be the amount of the scheduled trans action, possibly plus a cushion, if you're unsure.

But if you don't have even a guesstimate, then how can YNAB?

Fuzzball Meows Look at all scheduled txns and the divide the amount needed by the remaining months and add it up.

    • berksgr I've not heard anything about them trying to do that. Given that they currently can't even get the scheduled transactions handled correctly for the next month before the month rolls over, I doubt there is a plan to do this.

There may, possibly, perhaps, if they feel like it, be a plan to allow multiple target savings goals in one category, but as of now it's not something on the planning table (as far as I can gather). This is something that has been repeatedly requested. But most things that get repeatedly requested seem to get ignored, from what I've seen, so who knows?

It even has the same name as your topic.

I calculate using the tool mentioned and then just use a monthly contribution goal.

  • Thanks, yeah is it that vain. Though I would want categories that contain monthly, bi annual and yearly payments.

    • berksgr That calc it out tool does them all together.

The only problem with using it is that it's not native to YNAB, so if something changes, you have to go recalculate.
