Weird to be budgeted issue

Due to moving house and cleaning and being tired as heck, I haven't touched my budget in two weeks (two paycheques worth). I sat down to get it sorted out today, got my transactions imported and reconciled all my accounts. It resulted in some overspending in a couple categories for May, which I understand would overflow to June in the to be budgeted balance.

Once I got all my accounts reconciled and I saw the negative categories from overspending in May, I proceeded to fund all of my June expenses. June to be budgeted was a positive number because I had seen two paydays since the last budgeting session. I usually budget 1 month ahead and was able to cover all of my overspending (I think, because to be budgeted in June is positive), and fund all of my June expenses. Great. Time to move on to July.

So when budgeting a month ahead, usually I budget half of the following month with the first paycheque of the current month (e.g. June 12 is first of my biweekly paydays, this will fund all expenses for half of July). I did some of that, but using left over money from my damage deposit I got back so I haven't even gotten to the paycheque money yet. All of the paycheque money stays in an expenses category, one for me and one for my bf. That way I can pull out how much we need to allocate as necessary and keep the money we need separate.

After funding some July stuff and I was down to $0 in July, I went back to June and it has $46.48. But it doesn't have $46.48 when I look at July. And if I allocate that somewhere in June, it causes a negative to be budgeted balance in July. I have no idea what to do about this.

I'm thinking, maybe I should have cleared up those negative categories in May, but I don't know how it would be affecting this. Particularly since any negative categories should roll over to June's to be budgeted.

Does anyone have any ideas or experience with this type of problem?

Okay, I looked for the overspending and found about $90 worth. I covered the overspending in June with funds from another category, so I still have $46.48 in June to be budgeted. But I also have it in July to be budgeted now.

I guess the confusing part now is, why didn't I see a negative balance in July to be budgeted? That would normally have tipped me off about some overspending in the previous month.

If I had $46.48 in June and then rolled -$90 in overspending over to the next month, then the to be budgeted should be -$43.52 in July right? Cause overspending rolls over into to be budgeted?

Cash overspending rolls over into TBB. Credit card overspend is converted into credit card debt.

Ooooh yeah. I forgot about that. I just double checked, but it wasn't credit card overspending from June. The funds came from my chequing account. Any idea?

Space Cadet if the overspent category had any cc charges, even if was a checking account transaction that turned the category negative, it becomes credit overspending because the cash is gone from the checking account but the credit card bill has not yet been paid.

SgtBatten oh! I was trying to figure out how to reply to someone directly on the desktop site and I guess I'm a bit of a granny. 😅 I couldnt find the reply button without quoting something so I just used the reply to topic button. 🙃

But now I see the reply button on the mobile site. So weird! Thanks for the heads up tho. 😊
