All the versions of YNAB since the beginning of time...

Is there a list of all the versions of YNAB since the beginning of time and their run dates? I know there was the desktop version, classic, Pro, 3, 4, nYNAB, but I'm not sure when they all came online (not truly online for some, but you know what I mean). I know YNAB started in 2004 and I started using it in I think 2008. Was that the desktop version then? I remember the days when the anticipation of the End Of Month Rollover was all I looked forward to! I'd stay up all night just to catch the rollover. LOL Yep, YNAB nerd forever! Anyway, if someone has a list or knows all the versions and start/end dates, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

The three I know are YNAB 3, 2009, YNAB 4, summer 2012, and nYNAB, soft launch October 2015, full launch January 2016.

  • My YNAB Pro was purchased June 2008 (basically a spreadsheet) and my YNAB 3 in Dec 2009. I have the invoices for both! $39.95 and $59.95 respectively.

The version that I never owned was the very first one YNAB Basic - I only know about that because I can see on the invoice that an upgrade path was offered.

  • Thanks for all that info. So, at the beginning there was YNAB Basic, the desktop, spreadsheet version? I wonder if that’s what was then referred to as YNAB Classic once we went to YNAB Pro. Or did Pro become Classic when we moved to 3? Then we went to 3, 4, and then nYNAB. What is the current version called? We’re the iterations spreadsheet, desktop, web-based, and cloud based? Thanks to anyone who can help me with this.

Does anyone else remember the Rollover?

    • internettie as regards “Classic” that was the name that the YNAB team gave to what we  on this forum call YNAB4, to distinguish it when they rolled out the web based YNAB. So unless anyone can correct me I think the order is:

      YNAB Basic

      YNAB Pro

      YNAB 3

      YNAB 4 (now called Classic)

YNAB (web based and which some of us refer to as nYNAB or New YNAB)

pgauntlett thanks. That sounds about right. I can't remember if I started with Basic or Pro. I think I'll look to see if there are any screenshots of the older versions of YNAB. I still would like to know the dates for start and retirement for each iteration. I appreciate all the help.

  • I found some images that led to some version info:

    • YNAB Basic (spreadsheet) September 2004, discontinued July 2009
    • https://support.youneedabudget.com/t/h4shxd/ynab-basic-release-notes
    • YNAB Pro (Windows only, standalone) November 2006, discontinued December 2009
    • YNAB 3 (Windows & Mac) December 2009, support ended ???
    • YNAB 4 June 2012 through 2016 (desktop/Dropbox/cloud), then referred to as Classic YNAB, support ended Oct 31 2019
    • nYNAB/New YNAB launched December 30, 2015 (YNAB Mobile, web-based, subscription)

So, I started with YNAB Pro in 2008. Cool
