Classifying a Transfer

Hi

I have created categories for two goals, they are not in my checking account but others.

All are in my YNAB budget. The issue sI am having is that the entrees in my accounts are considered a transfer to those accounts, soi my I budget for the in the category is not really tracked.

How do I fix this?

  • Transfers between accounts don't get assigned categories, because you're not spending money, you're just moving money.  If you want to budget money to a category, just type in the amount in the budget column.  When you reach your budgeting goal for the category and want to spend from that category, you'll categorize that spending transaction.  And then that transaction will show up under the Activity column for that category.  Read this article about the relationship between your accounts and your budget.

  • Hi Grimrod ! It sounds like you may have multiple accounts for different savings purposes? That's great!

    Now that you’re using YNAB, your budget does that for you. Assigning dollars to the category gives it a job, but your budget doesn’t care which real-life account your money is stored in. The article altmegan shared, is a favorite around here—and this quick video is a good one too.

    I know it's a shift in thinking, but can be really powerful (not to mention, less work transferring between accounts). I hope you'll give it a try!
