Why is this red?

Hello

I set up an account for the cash 'In my purse' and I had £15 in there... £10 I had budgeted and today spent it for what I had budgeted it for... Then my mum need a fiver cash and so I gave the remaining £5 to her... so in my transactions I created a category for Random - as it wouldn't let me leave this category-less - and the deduction shows 'In my purse' just fine... but in my budget it shows like this as read... is this simply because I hadn't earmarked this for giving to my mum... and if it is - how do I account for the Random things like this when it comes to cash???

Sorry for the rambling!!! Thanks for you delightful thoughts! 😊

bevocat How do I do that when I've got a 0.00 balance in my tbb?  Shall I delete my transaction and start it over as though the cash were still in my purse?  Ta!

Ruthie Toothie Nope. That means that fiver was originally given some other job in your budget and it can no longer do that job. You gotta pull it from some other category. "The money's gotta come from somewhere."

  • So it doesn't matter that there was £5 in your purse - there was £0 in your Random category. If you wanted to spend from your Random category, you need to allocate funds to it by taking it from TBB or some other category. Location (account) and purpose (category) are two different things.

  • My life - I'm such a lunatic... I'm still looking at it all bog-eyed! I don't think  can budget for stuff that's in my saving account to do things that is using money from my checking account! So I need to figure that out so that everything that is in my saving account is staying there!!!! Only just realised that when I do my tbb I probably need to sort those first... I've budgeted no paying attention to where the money actually is... as though the £15 in my purse could in any way pay a bill that goes out by direct debit?!?!?!?! Lunatic!

Thanks muchos I think I've figured something out there!!!! Sigh!

Ruthie Toothie Well, not exactly. The time to consider where money lives is when you're going to spend it. The time to consider what money does is when you budget it.

I don't want you getting hung up about what the money in your savings account is "for", because it doesn't matter. All that matters is that the purchase is budgeted and that you ensure before you make the transaction that the money is available in your chosen payment method.

Ruthie Toothie I'm just going to leave this here. Read it. Read it again. Keep reading it until you really get - the location of your money has nothing to do with the purpose of your money:

nolesrule That's a good idea, I'll just put it with my 47,859 other bookmarks and promptly forget all about it. Do you think 153 accounts in YNAB just happened?! 😄
