YNAB online vs. Desktop?

I've have YNAB on my desktop V4 and I somehow got onto the online version.  I set up my budget but it doesn't transfer to my desktop version.  The online version is $83. a year after the 34 day trial.  How much does the desktop version cost as that is what I am used to.  Help!  I will have to manually transfer everything from the online version to my desktop version if it's cheaper to do so.  Any suggestions?  Thank you  馃槉

  • There is ability to transfer your YNAB 4 budget to the online version. In YNAB 4, click File and then Migrate to New YNAB. Be aware that any time in the past where you used a red arrow will result in some messiness in the new YNAB because the red arrow is no longer supported. Your best bet, quite frankly, is to ignore it and just do what you need to do to make sure that July 2018 in new YNAB matches July 2018 in YNAB 4.

If you decide you don't like the new version after your 34 day trial, you can always go back to YNAB 4 because you bought the license and it is always yours. You can redownload it if necessary, you just need the license key from when you originally bought it and YNAB support can help you with that if you've lost it. The software itself should keep working for a while, however there will likely be issues with the mobile app as your OS is updated and the app is no longer compatible.

  • Hi Sadula !

Sorry about the confusion there! In early 2016 we released a new version of YNAB that is entirely web-based, which means users sign in via our website. YNAB (the web app) is a different product than YNAB 4, so nothing will sync back to YNAB 4 if you make changes in the web app, or vice versa. 馃槉

The "new" YNAB is also a subscription based system, so that's why you're seeing that annual fee.

If you鈥檇 like to keep using YNAB 4, you definitely can! Just open YNAB 4 on your computer and keep budgeting. If you have since changed computers, you can re-download YNAB 4 here and when prompted, enter your license key. You can look up your key or let me know the name and email it might be under so I can help you find it (you can email in to [email protected]).

Did you have your budget set to Cloud Sync? If so, here's how you can get your budget back. If you didn't, you can copy the Documents>YNAB folder over using a flash drive or another file storage device.

While we hope you'll see the value and choose to upgrade, if you want to keep using YNAB 4鈥攖hat鈥檚 great, too. We'll continue to answer your questions and support you in using YNAB 4 as long as you continue to use it!

Lastly, have you heard Apple鈥檚 announcement that they are phasing out support for 32-bit apps like YNAB 4 Classic? If you use YNAB 4 Classic on a Mac computer this could affect you! For more details, check out this article.
