Budgeting with Unemployment Benefits

Hi, has anyone used YNAB to budget with their unemployment benefits?

  • I haven't personally, but I can't imagine it'd be any different than budgeting anything else. You get the money, you assign it the jobs it needs to do until the next time you get money. Lather, rinse, repeat.

  • Since unemployment is typically less than your normal salary, many will use their emergency fund to supplement. So categorizing $2000 unemployment as TBB, combined with a -$1000 (negative) budget entry for the Emergency Fund category results in a $3000 TBB do distribute as you normally would.

Of course, you may want to cut back on various categories, so you don't have to take as much out of the EF every month, but ultimately unemployment doesn't change anything process-wise.
