“To be Budgeted" Story

I was having difficulty with my budget. Once I got the hang of it in the current month, then here comes the whammy……the next month and I was literally forgetting how I managed to get everything to work out. 😓  I had some funds left over from previous month and I was lost. My budget was looking foreign to me. It was not clear, and very confusing.   I knew something was wrong but I kept at it  because I had hope in the one thing… that my account balance was the same as my bank balance.

It took me several tries to finally “get it” about the concept of the "To Be Budgeted". I finally found the culprit to my headaches and it has been the phenomenon: "To be budgeted”.  I kept wondering why every time when I had a deposit or inflow, the "To Be Budgeted" amount in my Budget screen was different from the "Working Balance" in my Account page. I found out that using the deposit as a "to be budgeted" is the difference. I was working so hard with trying to zero my budget, accounting for every dollar, and making sure that the working balance reconciled with my bank’s actual balance.  I was so tired of messing my budget up when entering my deposits and was so confused even considering foolish ideas of entering my deposits on the next month to avoid mistakes in the current month because I was tired of taking hours trying to find the mistake I made.  I had even creatively come up with the idea to create a bogus category to try to place money in just to get the zero base. I have been told that once I have verified that every dollar in my bank account is reflected in my budget and not a dollar more that I am truly available to budget. I found that it is imperative to categorize all income as To be Budgeted so that everything works. 😂  I would no longer need to use a bogus category since I know that everything in To be Budgeted  is truly available to budget!

Here are some pointers that were given to me: (you're welcome to chime in or let me know if this is correct)


Advance to next month's budget. (The math is easier there, because all overspending is covered.)



In the right sidebar, when no categories are selected, you’ll see your Total Available amount, which is the sum of the Available column.


Add that to the amount you have left To be Budgeted and any amount Budgeted in Future, if applicable.
Just in case your To be Budgeted was negative. If it is, you would need to subtract it from Total Available, because that means you’ve given jobs to dollars you don’t yet have. Preferably though, you would go back to this month’s budget and budget less in a few categories until To be Budgeted is back in the green at $0.


Now, add up the cash in your accounts. That includes checking, savings, and cash accounts, plus any positive balances on credit cards if applicable.


Your totals in step 3 and 4 should match, to the penny.

To be Budgeted is the sum of the four values to its right:


+Funds for [This Month] is the total of:

  • the amount leftover in To be Budgeted from last month
  • the amount Budgeted in Future from last month
  • all Inflow: To Be Budgeted transactions for the current month (including from Reconciliation Balance Adjustments)
  • any Starting Balance transactions with a date in the current month on cash accounts (not credit card accounts)
  • any positive credit card balances in the current month
  • any cash advances from a credit account to a cash account in the current month


-Overspending in [Last Month]

is the total of all cash overspending (checking/savings/cash accounts) in the previous month. The individual amounts are shown in red in the last month's Available column for any categories with cash overspending.

-Budgeted in [This Month]

is the total of the Budgeted column in this month.

-Budgeted in Future

is the amount of this month's funds you have budgeted in future months.

  • Awesome Post!! I've just been trying to reconcile my bank account balance to my Total Available and not getting very far and you're post has clarified a number of things for me.  Two thumbs up!

  • This post is awesome! I'm having a bit of a different problem my To Be Budgeted amount is too big i.e $3K. On friday, I was at 0 to be budgeted cause everything had a job and Monday $3K showed up. So How can I balance this out? Do I need to create a bogus category to clear this out? Thanks

      Sky Blue Disk Your budget is just another view of the money in your accounts. Extra money doesn't just appear or disappear in your budget. It has to come from somewhere. You will need to figure it out.

      Did you follow the steps above to make sure the amounts in your accounts are represented in your budget? You'll also want to make sure your account balances in YNAB match your actual account balances. If you haven't already, take a look at how to reconcile your accounts.

    • Nicole at YNAB Thank Nicole. I recently enabled it. The budget is called 2h FRESH START 2018. I created a category called rebalancing account (weird gap) I was able to put the money that was being over budgeted there, yet it did it again. Its frustrating because this is not helping me really keep track of my budget

      Thanks for enabling access to your account, so I can take a look at your budget! Some of your credit cards are missing a Starting Balance and look like they have a positive balance after you made a payment.
