American Express

Add me to the list of AMEX Import Issues.  Removed account, added back and it imported but it was a one time import only.  It will not update.  Please make this a high priority item!

AMEX imports with ease on my other programs.  Quicken and Personal Capitol.

Thanks!

  • Me too.  I didn't notice at first because my Amex card (Delta Platinum) that I use almost daily has been importing fine all month.  But then I noticed my husband's card account (Delta Gold) that I keep as a tracking account that he uses only for business travel expenses, hasn't updated since July 10.  This isn't the kind of account I can manually enter as he has a ton of charges that I can't anticipate, categorize, or even make sense of.  I try to help him itemize for his reimbursements and it's a mess right now.

So it's not ALL Amex accounts for some reason.  At least my on-budget one is ok for now...

Annieland Hi! Glad I'm not going crazy... Thanks for the reply. THE YNAB status link is saying they are having an issue with AMEX. Hopefully it is fixed soon. FYI, when I removed the account import data then reselected AMEX... it gave me 4 options for AMEX. One of them was the Delta Gold Card which I have. I thought I'd figured it out but its still not working consistently! Will keep you updated... thanks for responding... https://status.youneedabudget.com

  • Hi Mike Vio Annieland !

Since we’ve received reports from a number of American Express users who are running into the same issue, we’ve reported it to our import partner.

While we hope it will be fixed within a couple days, it could take a couple weeks depending on the complexity. We’ll post updates on our Status Page as we hear back from our import partner, so please check in with us there!

To keep everything up to speed, enter transactions on the go with the mobile app and try File-Based Importing in the web app. The good news is it's super easy to download a QFX from Amex (it's the "Quicken" option), and then drag and drop a file containing your transactions right into YNAB. If the QFX file type isn't available, try downloading a CSV.

As always, please let us know if you have any other questions!

    • Nicole FYI for anyone else who finds this. You can't export QFX from the Amex website right now. I talked with a support person via chat and they say ""This impact is expected to remain for the next 4-8 weeks approximately""

You can export CSV but YNAB doesn't seem to recognize it, possibly for the same reasons why the other imports aren't working, dunno.

Tomato Orca Same. I tried the CSV for the first time this morning just to see how it works, and it looks fine in Excel but does nada in YNAB.

    • Hi Tomato Orca and Annieland !

I have an American Express credit card and I'm still able to download QFX files. After I log in, I can click on Statements & Activity, then click on the Download icon, and select Quicken then Download

A user in a different thread mentioned that there's a different page layout (Beta) that may make this unattainable. If you don't see the images in my screenshots linked above, we do have resources for downloading the CSV file instead!

Importing CSV files is our last resort option because there isn't an industry standard format and they need to be formatted just right or the import won't pick up the new transactions.

Here's an article that covers Importing a CSV file that will show you how to format the file as well as an (unofficial) CSV converter created by a fellow YNABer which may help convert your CSV file from your bank into a compatible format. :)

Give that a try, and let me know how it goes!

  • This needs to get fixed.   Using YNAB, I've gained total financial control of credit spending.  Switching to Amex (benefits) because I know I'll be able to manage paying the balance every month without surprises.   Now I'm in chaos again.   Importing works, but it's a PITA.

    • Hi Justin C !

Sorry for the delayed response here! There's currently a wide-spread issue with American Express, but we're working with our import partner on a fix. I took a look and I'm currently seeing a successful Amex connection in your budget. Hopefully, it will stay connected, but we're still ironing out the details to keep that connection stable. :)

Faness Thanks for your response.   Yes, after deleting the connection and reestablishing it, things appear to flow again.   I'll avoiding making any changes to it!

  • Hello, just wanted to add that there are AmEx import issues again. I have tried removing and re-adding the connection. Please let me know if any additional information would be helpful. There have been AmEx importing issues on and off for the past month or two.

      Pink Keyboard

Me too. It seems every time I try it it's either delayed or won't work; basically useless. The latest status update on 9/2 said remove the connection, so I did that and now I can't reestablish it.

There have been Amex issues with YNAB for months. While I've only had to re-log once at Personal Capital, I've probably done so 20+ times with YNAB.

    • Great news, Pink Keyboard ! I can see the American Express Credit Card connection is successful (and may even have transactions available), but you'll need to link the connection up to your budget accounts like this. Once you do that, it should start importing again for you.

Let me know how it goes!

    • Hi David C ! Your American Express connection is successful at the moment. That might have been a temporary error, or removing and re-adding did the trick! The American Express connection has definitely been a rocky one the last few months. I'm sorry for the trouble there!

Let me know how things are looking on your end. I also sent a reply to your email. 🙂

    • Nicole Thanks for the reply. I had just unlinked my AmEx accounts (and kept the connections active) so that I could import .csv files for all of the missing transactions. Even though the connection is successful and I have linked it back up again per your instructions, the transactions still do not import themselves, so I think there is still an issue. The connection has always shown as "good", but the importing does not work.

    • Pink Keyboard On our end I'm seeing that there are three accounts linked and transactions last imported on the 16th, and 17th for two of those accounts. The ones that were ready when you re-linked, look like they did import!

Are you missing transactions from all three, or a particular account? I've reached out via email, so we can narrow things down and gather a few more details. 🙂 And we'll continue there!

Nicole I could only get it working by using my wife's Amex login. It wouldn't work with mine. Thankfully, each of us is an authorized user on the other's account, so I can get all our transactions from one login.

So like another person posted near the top, it doesn't seem to be all accounts affected.
