Can't change to a Transfer Payee

.Hi,

I transferred money between a few accounts at my bank and these transactions were then imported into YNAB. All of the accounts are setup in YNAB, but the transactions have the text from the Bank in the Payee field and want a category. I have tried multiple times to change the Payee to make it a Transfer in YNAB but the app won't let me select those payees. It doesn't give me an error. It just changes nothing when I select "Transfer: Checking Account"

Should I delete the imported transactions and just make manually make new ones in YNAB?

  • Hi Steel Blue Sun !

Hmm, that sounds strange indeed! Is this on the YNAB mobile app? If so, try deleting and reinstalling the app, or even just quitting it and reopening it!

Can you tell me what device you're using?

  • This is on the web site on my laptop. I'll probably try deleting the transactions later and entering them manually.

Steel Blue Sun This is a dumb question, but have you tried reloading the site? This sounds like the kind of thing that happens when YNAB is loaded in a tab but temporarily can't access the internet or not all the Javascript came through or something.

    • mamster Thank you! That seems to have done the trick. I will try to remember that in the future.

    • I have exactly same issue and reloading the page fixes it only temporarily. After adding some transactions in a row it stopped working again. It's hugely inconvenient to say the least...

Tomato Snow Couple of questions: are you running an adblocker or other extensions that affect Javascript? If so, try turning them off. And are you sure you're not trying to enter a transfer to the account you're currently looking at (I do this all the time)?

    • mamster Nope, I don't use any JS blocking extensions. Sure I'm sure. ))) I'm using YNAB since desktop version so I pretty accustomed with interface. So I'm talking about specific issue. In my case Payee drop down doesn't collapse after value selection (after some time, like I said above).

Tomato Snow Gotcha. Have you tried a different browser? Not as a solution, but just for info to include in the bug report.

    • mamster Actually I did. I installed Firefox and after 5 or so transactions it happened in there as well... So I believe it is YNAB issue, not browser. BTW using only latest versions on Win10 Pro x64 1903. Pretty much fresh install.

    • Hey Tomato Snow ! That behavior does sound a little odd. If you use a private browser window, do you see the same issue occur? When you have a moment, would you mind filling out a Bug Report? Go ahead and let them know you've tried those steps as well. 😄

    • Nicole Thanks for your reply. I will try it later today and report here and in Bug report.

    • mamster never a dumb question. I was having a similar issue and a simple refresh took care of it, thanks!

  • I also have this issue and refreshing the window works.  I use Privacy Badger, DuckDuckGo and Disconnect.  Haven't tried disabling any of them to see if the problem persists; I'd rather just occassionally refresh

    • Hi Beige Drill ! Thanks for letting us know! I'm glad that refreshing helps here. We'd love to narrow things down, and figure out what's causing that behavior. If you feel inspired, please submit a Bug Report—and our team is happy to help! No pressure, it's totally up to you. 😉

  • This was driving me mad!! Refreshing did the trick.

    • Orchid Mixer , Yes that solves the issue, but only temporary. After some more new transactions the problem appears again. Despite it's easy to hit the F5 to refresh the page, it's still a bug n the code for that control element and in my opinion should be fixed.

  • Same problem.  Payment to x Loan is selected in the payee field, but it still demands a category and leaves that field blank. Refreshing sometimes works, but not always.

A transfer should only require a category if it's from an on budget account to an off budget account. If that's not the case, please submit a Bug Report so our team can take a closer look at what's happening! :)

Why does a transfer from "budget" to "non-budget" accounts require a category?  I have an sum of money that had to be transferred to my checking (budget) account from an external source.  How can I move that sum to my savings (non-budget) account without arbitrarily (and inaccurately) affecting my budget?

Nathan Money crossing the budget boundary (either way) requires a category. Your savings should be ON-budget so you can use categories to define jobs for those dollars as well. What are you saving for? Christmas? New car? House downpayment? Vacation? Income Replacement? Home maintenance? etc.

The notable exception is if this money is for retirement or investment where a Tracking account (or not even an account in YNAB) is more appropriate. In this case you'd chalk up the transfer to a category. The point is that money is no longer part of your "spending plan" (a.k.a., "budget"). If this was a one-time kind of thing and both inflow and outflow (in checking) are in the same month, just use To Be Budgeted for both the inflow and outflow. The net will be $0 to the budget.

dakinemaui Thanks for your reply - makes sense enough.  It's a one-off situation, but it sounds like there are a few options to consider.

  • Well, this has been a HUGE frustration for me. I wonder if it is just a Chrome thing or if other browsers have the problem too. Anyway, I am glad to have a workaround but it is still super frustrating.
