Why is there no running balance?

Please explain why YNAB ditched the running balance. It is super useful, especially if you're reconciling against a statement, as it enables you to easily find the last time statement and YNAB matched and work from there.

The toolkit has a running balance option in nYNAB.  I found it works best in Chrome on my computer.

  • Yes, I do use the Toolkit. However the Toolkit is an add-on and YNAB could make it incompatible.

My question is why we need to use an add-on for a feature YNAB should provide.

And the broader question is, if a large number of YNAB users are using the add-on’s various features, they’re obviously important to us, so why isn’t YNAB building them in?

Nina Birnbaum YNAB actually has been building in some of the Toolkit's features into YNAB, though rather slowly. Hopefully we'll see more of that this year.

I don't expect to see everything the Toolkit includes within YNAB itself (a lot of the features may not be applicable to everyone or the specific audience YNAB is targeting), but I agree that Running Balance is one of those things I really hope to see YNAB integrate.

When I asked support about the running balance they told me to ask for things I like in the toolkit, which I do now.  They said they are building a "hit list" of things we want added to the main program.  As Ben said, things are moving slower than I would like also and things are getting better all the time.

  • Hi Nina Birnbaum ,

Thanks for letting us know you were looking for a way to see your running balance. While there isn't a running balance column in the new YNAB, the working balance at the top of your account will tell you the balance of your account after all uncleared transactions have cleared. (Future or scheduled transactions do not affect the working balance.)

Also, the Selected Total feature can help you figure out the balance of your account on any particular day:

     - In the search field, begin typing the date you’d like to check.

     - Click on “On or Before [Date]” from the drop-down menu.

     - Select all the transactions using the checkbox above the first transaction.

In the upper right corner, you’ll see the Selected Total value which is the balance of the account on that day.

I hope that helps! And, thanks again for letting us know what you're wishing to see in YNAB! :-)

    -Elena
